In early 1980, a band called PREVIOUS PAGE from Brugge (Belgium) changed their name to ACID.

Acid was among the first European bands to emerge in the wake of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Comprising guitarists [Donald] Demon and [Dirk] Dizzy Lizzy; bassist [Peter] T-Bone; drummer [Geert] Anvil; and charismatic, leather-loving singer/dominatrix Kate de Lombaerd, the quintet soon evolved from a gritty but conventional heavy metal band into a proto-thrash unit heavily inspired by the likes of Venom and Raven.

In 1982 they released a single "Hell On Wheels" c/w "Hooked On Metal", followed shortly by their debut album "Acid".

ACID's songs deal with the subjects of hell, satan, demons and all the other black metal preoccupations. Heavy riffs, wild guitar explosions, double bassdrums - a thundering sound that was always recognizable - together with the powerful voice of Kate.

Prince of hell and fire...

Genre: New Wave of Belgian Heavy Metal

This album is basically traditional heavy metal with an injection of Motorhead and punk energy, and it works very well, as the album contains a bunch of fast and energetic heavy metal tracks.

"Max Overload" (or "Max Oferlood" in Flemish-accented English [which certainly makes the charm-o-meter go up) and "No Time" sound like inspired by Motorhead and haev a punky edge to them, while tracks like "Black Car" and "Lucifera" have the same drive as Maiden's "Phantom of the Opera". The remaining tracks are more along the lines of Judas Priest.

All the tracks on this album are rather good, but "Bottoms Up" deserves mention, as it mamages to combine the Motorhead drive with the "phantom of the Opera" drive... and I must say, this is the weirdest drinking song I've ever heard - if you play this in a pub, you can be sure that 30 minutes later the police will show up and close down the place to prevent the bar fight from becoming a city-wide riot. Other than that, it's an effing good track.

This album is recommended to fans of traditional metal and fans of Motorhead. It's really good. So cheers, bottoms up, and take cover.

Metal beast...

Genre: NWoBHM ('B' for Belgian... you know, like Van Damme)

This stuff is quite good, I must say. While not super original, Acid really manage to blend in influences from the likes of Motorhead, more traditional metal, a bit of punk and the thrash metal scene that was emerging in the States as the time.

The first track "S.T.C." is a fast-paced Motorhead-like rocker, while the following track sounds like a simplified thrasged up version of Maiden's "Phantom of the Opera", and "Halloween Queen" is more in the vein of Judas Priest. This type of variation characterizes the entire album, which means that it will probably have wide appeal among fans of various old school types of metal.

Standout tracks are "Lost in Hell", "Warriors of the Dawn", "She Loves You" (not related to the Beatles song), and the semi-thrasher "Satan's Delivery". "Big Ben" is also worth mentioning, given that it is a hymn to metal, which is based on the melody that Big Ben in London strikes.

This album should be a hit with fans of Motorhead, early thrash metal and more hard-hitting traditional metal.
