Ladybaby is a Japanese "kawaii metal" (cute metal) band, formed in 2015 by crossdressing Australian professional wrestler Rick Magarey (aka Ladybeard) and young aspiring photographic models Rie Kaneko and Rei Kuromiya. The girls are 14 and 17 years Magarey's junior respectively.
Ladybeard provides the band with death metal vocals, while Rie and Rei sing in a more conventional J-Pop style, with an unnamed metal backing band.
The video for the band's first single "Nippon Manju" released in July 2015 went viral, clocking up one million views on YouTube in two days.
Ladybeard left the band in August 2016, and the band rebranded as The Idol Formerly Known as Ladybaby. Rei left in November 2017, suffering throat problems and disillusioned with idol culture.
The Idol Formerly Known as Ladybaby moved toward more J-Pop centred material, with less and less kawaii metal content. In 2018, the now four-piece band reclaimed the Ladybaby name.
