Steppenwolf is a Canadian-American rock band who had their heyday in the late 1960s. Formed in 1961 in Los Angeles by John Kay as The Sparrows, the group was retooled in 1967 and given the name Steppenwolf. The group went on hiatus in the period from 1972 to 1974, and again in the from period 1976 to 1980, reemerging as John Kay & Steppenwolf.
Having release many hit singles and albums within various hard rock genres, the band are considered important in heavy metal music history because of the single "Born to be Wild", written by Mars Bonfire, which was released in 1968 and featured in the feature film "Easy Rider". The song is often considered one of the first heavy metal songs, and it was one of the first songs to feature the the expression "heavy metal" in its lyrics.
