OK this makes me a bit red in the face being one of the big name prog metal acts, (and one of the first I was ever told of) but I've never listened to anything by Ayreon. Can't let this continue.
Recommendations please! Also, what I can expect from said albums. Sure, I could check the highest rated albums on here and PA and read some reviews, but let's have some discussion instead! Edited by The Angry Scotsman - 22 Jun 2011 at 4:34am |

I only have one album 01011001 and it kicks butt, it is really worthwile to listen to (sadly is the only one I have), it is sort of symph metal with many guest musician, with neuances from new age and ambient music + some industrial stuff, but mostly heavy symphonic metal, some riffs are really shugging around,
the human equation is the highest rated one on PA so might check that one out also (i have no clue how that sounds like but probably epic), Ayreon = epic, if you like fantasy and sci-fi put on some Ayreon with some headphones and you are in the seventh heaven (no Jessica Biel unfortiunatly), Arjen is godlike in epic stories so be prepear for some cheese also (but it is good cheese) |

Well Symph X being my favorite band I can tolerate some, good, cheese!
Yeah I did end up just checking the highest rated albums but still wanted some input. Well I'll check out those 2 first. |

For me, Into the Electric Castle is the one to hear. I'm also fond of The Final Experiment as well.

I have the Human Equation and 01011001, and have heard stuff from some other Ayreon albums but I think 01011001 wins by far.

I have most of their output, but Im not really much of a fan. Too much pomp and symphonic elements for my taste and not enough molten metal. It doesnt mean I cant appreciate how professional they are or how cleverly composed their music are. and WTF!!! nice ladies Arjen. No wonder he smiles so much:
My introduction to the band was:
and I guess thats as "metal" as Ayreon gets.
...oh and defintely keep away from this one unless you end up becoming a hardcore fan somewhere down the road:

Human Equation is my favorite, but I like all of this albums. I just absolutely love the story on THE. It is a good one that needs to be read along to with the booklet so that you can keep up with what is actually going on.

Yeah all I ever hear is human equation and 01011001 so I'm going to try some other stuff first. Though I'm sure those 2 get all that credit for a reason.
Thanks for the tips Jonas, I've listened to a bit of that one thus far and I'm liking it! I may try the other, non metal, half next. Yes, lucky Arjen indeed! Even prog rock stars can live the rock life Edited by The Angry Scotsman - 22 Jun 2011 at 9:23am |

The Universal Migrator double album (Dream Sequencer and Flight of the Migrator) are his best, followed by Into the Electric Castle and The Final Experiment. I think 0101100110 (whatever) is Ayreon's weakest to date, and The Human Equation just leaves me cold. Actual Fantasy is actually good, not great.

Of The Universal Migrator pair I may be in the minority in this but I actually have always preferred the non-metal half. Flight of the Migrator is still a solid album but I think The Dream Sequencer has more memorable songs on it. My overall ranking would be:
Into the Electric Castle (and by many miles) The Final Experiment 01011001 The Human Equation The Dream Sequencer Flight of the Migrator Actual Fantasy Revisited (I have not heard the original version)

Ayreon and Therion are kinda following the same musical paths, it is metal opras, with tons of pathos and guest voalists
Derek Sherinian plays some keybord on 0100110 album, and some vocals by Daniel Gildenlv, and PAs own Phideux Xavier Edited by Balthamel - 22 Jun 2011 at 3:53pm |

Yeah but nothing is I have liked what I've heard thus far, thank goodness. I never really liked Fates Warning or Quensryche (well kinda) so if Ayreon failed me I'd lose faith in traditional prog metal! |

This is the ranking for me:
1. Dream sequencer 2. Flight of the Migrator 3. The Final Experiment 4. Into the Electric Castle 5. Actual fantasy 6. The Human Equation 7. 010100110 The Dream Sequencer has amazing songs with Johan Edlund, Neal Morse or even Arjen singing himself. |

I've at least listened to most of the albums once and I am liking what I hear.
I'm really liking both Universal Migrators. Into the Electric Castle has been cool and THE and 010100110 both seem enjoyable. |
