Ok, this might be strange but I'm really interested in. And idk if this topic was already on this forum, I'm truly lazy to check this. You know, I always feel some kind of deep connection with the music which I listen to and which was released in 2001, a year when I was born. When I think about it, I always remember first lines from Porcupine Tree's song "Time Flies" where SW reflects on this connection:

I was born in '67
The year of Sgt. Pepper
And Are You Experienced

That's how I feel it too. Seems like these records have grown up with me and it all seems to make so much sense. Here's my birth year's list - some kind of entry level I guess but this list will definitely be updated for years. Also I will try to add my personal facts related to these records:
(italic for records which aren't on MMA)

Akira Yamaoka - Silent Hill 2 (no doubt my all-time favourite soundtrack)
Opeth - Blackwater Park (third one on my personal Opeth list)
Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down (the most essential Katatonia album)
Tool - Lateralus (IMHO this was a creative peak for Tool)
maudlin of the Well - Bath / Leaving Your Body Map (I prefer LYBM more than Bath but both are diamonds on the avant-garde metal field)
Converge - Jane Doe (my all-time favourite ANY-core record)
Fennesz - Endless Summer (huh, probably my favourite glitch/IDM record. No one can bring such an awesome sunny atmosphere like Christian did)

Simple question: what your birth year's records do you love and do you feel any kind of that connection which I tried to describe with my poor English? LOL

My birth year is 1988 and while I wouldn't say I know it's releases extensively, there are some damn fine ones including:

  • Attacker - The Second Coming (USPM)
  • Blind Guardian - Battalions of Fear (Power)
  • Chastain - The Voice of the Cult (USPM/Heavy)
  • Crimson Glory - Transcendence (USPM)
  • Death - Leprosy (Death)
  • Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II (Power)
  • Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Heavy)
  • Liege Lord - Master Control (USPM)
  • Metallica - ...And Justice For All (Thrash)
  • Riot - ThunderSteel (USPM)
  • Running Wild - Port Royal (Heavy/Power)
  • Scanner - Hypertrace (Power/Speed)
So as you can see, it was a pretty amazing year across the power metal spectrum, with EuroPM in its infancy and USPM in its heyday. My favourite band Blind Guardian released their first album and Iron Maiden released my favourite from them as well. Death also released Leprosy which for a long time was the only standard death metal record I owned.

1972. These are gonna be kind of obvious I think...

Deep Purple - Machine Head
Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
Alice Cooper - School's Out

And I can't think of much else.

1977...not exactly a year with many of my favorite releases...I`m actually having a hard time right now mentioning a single one.

Hmm...

Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation
Wishbone Ash - Frontpage News (not exactly a favorite, but it´s decent enough).

I just think my preferences are typically from the early- mid- 70s or the 80s/90s. The late 70s not so much...

Like you Adam I was born in '88. I'm not sure what records there are off the top of my head from that year that I like but some you mentioned are:
  • Crimson Glory - Transcendence (USPM)
  • Death - Leprosy (Death)
  • Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II (Power)
  • Liege Lord - Master Control (USPM)
  • Riot - ThunderSteel (USPM)

Being an old bugger born in 61 I had a look at my collection database to see if i had any records from that year and I haven't! I have some jazz stuff from earlier than my year of birth that I like such as miles Davis, John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk and loads of stuff from later in the 60's I like but seems 61 was a pretty shit year for music.

I sneaked in at the tail end of 1989. At this point, a few of my favourite metal sub genres were only in their infancy. I've probably missed some but off the top of my head for metal/metal related releases:

Godflesh - Streetcleaner
Nirvana - Bleach
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
Melvins - Ozma

Some non metal releases I love from 1989 are:

Pixies - Doolittle
The Cure - Disintegration
Bad Religion - No Control
NOFX - S&M Airlines
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Slint - Tweez
The Offspring - The Offspring

It may not be my favourite year for albums, but the more music I get into the more I realize that 1985 wasn't too bad a year for music. Actually, pretty darn good now that I look through my media collection.

Metal:
Anthrax - Spreading The Disease
Slayer - Hell Awaits (I don't currently own this, but like it)
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
Faith No More - We Care A Lot
S.O.D. - Speak English or Die
Megadeth - Killing Is My Business.. And Business Is Good

Non-Metal:
Tears For Fears - Songs from the Big Chair
Allan Holdsworth - Metal Fatigue
The Cure - The Head on the Door
Husker Du - New Day Rising
Killing Joke - Night Time
Marc Johnson - Bass Desires
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Firstborn Is Dead
Pat Metheny & Ornette Coleman - Song X
R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction
The Replacements - Tim
Run-D.M.C - The King of Rock
Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising
Ton Waits - Rain Dogs
Weird Al Yankovic - Dare To Be Stupid LOL
