Just using the words "traditional" and "progressive" together will seem like an oxymoron for some people, but all I mean by that is your standard "Dream Theater/Fates Warning" bands. Not just the rip-offs, but bands who play in that general style of mixing classic prog rock with traditional metal or power metal. A lot of people are probably tired of this, but I'm just now really delving past the obvious bands and hoping to find some more gems. I'll list as many as I can find or think of to get started, including the obvious.

Pull Me Under. You've heard it.

Fates Warning: Point of View. You've heard it.

Andromeda: Crescendo of Thoughts

Ark: Heal the Waters (Jorn Lande on vocals)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALCcnrZ9UYo&feature=related

Circus Maximus: Sin (Very DT influenced)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1wK2Il3y7I&feature=related

Vanden Plas: I Can See (Another 'DT clone".)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcbgMkkl4nI&feature=related

Dominici: The Caloling  (DT's first vocalist's band. )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEq8AULDUrg

Haken: Point of No Return (Great band!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt03KJw2IAU

Lemur Voice: Divided
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfOeodJK6jU&feature=related

Pain of Salvation: (Arguably these guys aren't very "traditional", but I lump them in anyway.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB8MbuV2XWA

Spheric Universe Experience: Sceptic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXNcrd6uyg8

Dali's Dilemma: Miracles of Yesteryear

Threshold: Ravages of Time (A little thrashy)

Here's a few more suggestions:

Riverside from Poland. My favourite prog/metal band and one of the best bands from the last 10 years IMO:

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/riverside.aspx" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/riverside.aspx

Shadow Gallery. One of the more consistent prog/metal bands of the last 10 years:

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/shadow-gallery.aspx?ac=shado" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/shadow-gallery.aspx?ac=shado

Pagan's Mind from Norway. Not yet in our archives I noticed. I'll be changing that very quickly. Here's a couple tracks from thier best album Celestial Entrance:

Another great band from Norway, Conception:

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/conception.aspx?ac=concep" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/conception.aspx?ac=concep

Canadian guitar hero Dave Martone. Instrumental prog/metal, jazz fusion. Technical wizardry:
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/martone.aspx?ac=martone" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/martone.aspx?ac=martone

Another Canadian instrumental band with only one album from 2000:

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/grey-matter.aspx?ac=grey" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/grey-matter.aspx?ac=grey

And one more technical instrumental band, Canvas Solaris:
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/canvas-solaris.aspx?ac=canvas" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/canvas-solaris.aspx?ac=canvas

@Certif1ed: LEGEND! Incredible band!! I was really into a whole murky, barbarian, progressive, proto-metal thing recently too, but Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol and Brocas Helm were about as far as I got. Damn, I'm seriously blown away by this.

Nightsun is pretty great too. Kind of a Deep Purple/MC5/Black Sabbath-by-way-of-RIO sound. Really interesting band!

@UMUR: Heaven's cry is a really sweet band! I hadn't heard of them.

Great suggestions, all!

Oops, took to long with that last post.

@Colt: Thanks, that's a bunch of bands!

@Cannon: I'm liking Pagan's Mind already. Hadn't heard them before either.

Yeah its really too bad they are kind of obscure. I really like their sound. Not too accessible, which is something I prefer.

If you dont know Psychotic Waltz yet Id suggest taking a listen to this song. One of my alltime favorites. Psychadelic tinged progressive metal Headbanger

I guess my review of Into the Everflow speaks for itself: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/into-the-everflow--review.aspx?id=214268" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/into-the-everflow--review.aspx?id=214268 . I am completely madly in love with this album and have been for almost 20 years.

Psychotic Waltz is one of those bands I've heard a little, but never quite known what to do with. I probably should spend some time on them.

If you want an easy introduction to Psychotic Waltz Id take a listen to the "Bleeding" album. Its my least favorite album by the band but it probably makes for a good introduction. The most interesting albums by Psychotic Waltz are the two first IMO.

Sonic Pulsar, kind of traditional prog metal I guess, some ambient influence here though. Two songs from each album.
