OK, so here's the situation:
April 29 2016 Iron Maiden is playing in Christchurch. I live about 3/4 of an hour away. I've seen Iron Maiden before, and it was the second best concert I've ever seen (behind Impaled Nazarene, but only just). Tickets are about $150 for a good one. I have just bought Book Of Souls, and it fucking rocks! April 30 2016 Black Sabbath is playing their final ever concert in Dunedin. I live about 4 hours drive from Dunedin, and accommodation is next to impossible to find. The cheapest tickets are $170. As someone else pointed out to me the other day, the likelihood of Sabbath cancelling due to health (Iommi or Osbourne) is quite high. I have not long bought 13, and found it dull as fuck. Just like a fucking bus. You wait bloody ages for one, and then two turn up at once! What do I do? Go to Maiden, who I've seen before and bloody loved, or go to Sabbath, because it's their last ever show anywhere? I like Iron Maiden better than Black Sabbath, always have, always will, but then I understand the history behind Sabbath, and their back catalogue is incredible. Or do I do the totally insane, and mortgage my soul to the devil, and attempt to do both? I know there will be metalheads aplenty trying to do that. Decisions, decisions...

I'm waiting for UK dates. I plan to sell at least two of my kids to go to both.

I'm considering the insane option... It'll only happen once.

I´m thinking this is such a rare opportunity, that you´ll have to do both. It´s gonna be expensive and you might have to sleep in the car after the Black Sabbath show, but I saw Sabbath on the 13 tour and I promise you it´s worth it (they only played a few new tracks and they actually functioned really well live). Great, great show. Ozzy isn´t that energetic anymore, but at least he hits the right notes most of the time. The rest of the band are extremely well playing. Just watching Tony play live was a big experience for me. I´ll never forget that. The man is a legend...

I agree it's a tough decision and I personally would not be able to afford either. I think The Book of Souls sounds like the Iron Maiden I know from the eighties and I saw the Powerslave show way back. I thought 13 sounded as id expect Sabbath to sound and I've probably listened to them more than Maiden in recents decades. Really tough call. Can you get a loan?

As Jonas said, Sabbath were fantastic on the 13 tour but if you can't afford both and you much prefer Maiden then I'd go for them. You'll probably get the chance to see Maiden again though. As you didn't like 13 depends how highly you rate Sabbath's earlier albums I guess.
If it was me I'd go for Sabbath as I've only seen them once and Maiden a few times. Edited by Nightfly - 16 Sep 2015 at 9:50am |

I'd go with both if you have the money to do that. One is a band that you know plays great live, and the other is most likely on their last tour.

I voted for Sabbath before I read your post, but I would pick Maiden if you can only go to one. They've still got a great live show.

I would definately go with the "sell your soul to the devil" plan. Those are two tours that could be the end of metal history. I agree with you that i prefer Maiden overall but Sabbath is well.... SABBATH!!!!!!!!
Steal mum's credit card if you just can't fathom your soul burning in an eternal lake of fire, but go! go! go! to both! At least i would. Heard you can just crash in sheep pastures down there and it's all good

You can't sleep outdoors in Otago at that time of year. You'd freeze yer bollocks off! What I think I'll do is get the Maiden tickets when they go on sale next week, and just hold off on Black Sabbath, rather than having the big hit of $600+ all at once (the missus will want to go too. Even though she grew up with disco and country music, she really liked Iron Maiden last time, and loves Ozzy's voice). From the looks of it, the stadium where Sabbath are playing can add a heap more seats if need be. I might be able to see a way to doing it (and affording it!) later.

OK, made up my mind. Too poor to do both. I'm sticking with Maiden, and going to see Jimmy Carr in January.
Was talking to a friend of mine a week or so back. He's doing both, but the only tickets he could get for Sabbath were over $300. I was working on a budget with the cheapest tickets, and it's now just not sensible to do it. Gotta keep buying those damn lottery tickets, and then if I win, it's metal for life!
