I already know of Miles Davis of course, as well as Thelonous Monk, John Coltrane and some fusion bands like Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report; was just wondering if anyone knows of any other artists/bands I might be missing out on on the whole spectrum of jazz, modern artists/bands in particular.

I'm still at a "basic" level when I listen to all sorts of jazz compilations though. I'll see where this will take me.

I thought that i had posted a follow-up recommendation list but I must have forgot to hit enter. (If this were PA I would figure that CAPTCHA didn't allow me to post and I gave up.) I tend to like drum-led jazz bands, so bands/artists like Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Dave Weckl, Tony Williams' Lifetime, and Bill Bruford's Earthworks come to mind.
