Black Sabbath's discussions are always about Ozzy or Dio. Tony Martin's era is unfrequently covered. Let's talk about his time with the band. My personal favorite is his debut, The Eternal Idol.

Uh man its been a while. Ill have to look through my reviews of the albums before I can vote.
Its definitely my least favorite Black Sabbath era. Uh wait, I almost forgot the two horrible albums that came before the Tony Martin fronted albums. Those are definitely the worst. I actually like some of the Tony Martin led albums. Just not as much as the Ozzy or Dio led ones.

Good idea for discussion. On Encyclopaedia Metallum, people say good things about Headless Crosses and TYR, so I'll check those two first.

These are some of my favorite tracks of the Black Sabbath album I mentioned to refresh memories. Great stuff.

I'm only familiar with a few of the songs from that era that has music videos. Didn't really interest me, though the song Headless Cross is kinda cool.

Like UMUR, it's been a long time since I've pulled out any of these albums. Going on memory it has to be TYR. Not a big fan of the Tony Martin era but none of these releases are near as bad as Born Again. One of the most disappointing releases in my lifetime, so far. I had huge expectations for this album at that time. Ian Gillan coming in as the new vocalist. Hell, this album is going to be fantastic. Awful and is just as the bad as the album cover.

Totally underrated stuff, especially here it seems
At least Headless Cross, Tyr and Eternal Idol are fine albums, especially the first two. Sure it's different and to some it isn't the Black Sabbath they enjoy, but speaking of heavy metal in general, the Tony Martin era has some fine offerings. And how could an album full of Tony Iommi's riffing and Cozy Powell's drumming be bad? Martin has a wide range and a powerfull, even a bit Dio-ish sounding voice, and the songs are top notch. Check out some tunes from Headless Cross and Tyr and give the Martin-era a chance! |

I feel the first three albums of the Tony Martin era (Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, and Tyr) are really criminally underrated. Cross Purposes and Forbidden are largely filler and pretty poor. Martin really was Sabbaths second best singer they ever had after RJD. The man had great range and sounded good live. Cant say the same for Ozzy.

Tyr is one of my favorite albums, and Tony Martin's vocals are stellar.

It's been ages since I've heard them but I remember liking TYR. It had some Odin-related stuff in it from what I remember, and one one the songs early on in it was pretty fast. I can't remember much of anything from Headless Cross. I'll have to revisit those albums again.

Never heard one. Until about 2007 I thought that Black Sabbath had broke up when Dio left and never recorded new work.
I knew they reunited with Ozzy in the very late 90s, but assumed it was revival from complete Death, not just a line up change. |

I haven't listened to the Tony Martin albums in a really long time, it's usually the Ozzy albums when I'm in the mood for BS. I should give them a listen one of these days because I like them.
