Hammett as a musician really has no redeeming qualities.

I've always thought Mustaine is a better technical player, though both obviously have some classic riffage

Didn't know this was really up for debate Mustaine, obviously.

Lost respect for these archives when I saw Creed added, among other bands. Not going to be foruming here anymore. You can keep my reviews if you want.

Neither of them are among my favorite guitarists despite them both being in classic metal bands. Kirk has more memorable leads, but Mustaine has written better riffs/songs and is a better rhythm player. I think their lead playing skills are actually pretty comparable. Mustaine, despite his voice being an acquired taste, also wins there. Hammet's backing vocals don't match those of Newsteads. I guess I'll choose Dave.

Mustaine. Looks like this one's fairly unanimous!

The difference is I actually like Dave, as opposed to Kirk. Easy pick.

Dave. I actually have more albums with Kirk since I prefer Metallica to Megadeth but I prefer Dave as a player. I've always kind of felt that the Metallica lead guitarist role could be filled by anyone worth their salt.

Without a shred of doubt Dave.
Now I like Metallica and Kirk is alright, but that's just it. Kirk is a better person but Mustaine is a far superior guitarist, and songwriter. |

Dave far and away. At least no one ever shoved Dave in a corner and made him play a riff the way they wanted it done.
Lost so much respect for Kirk when I heard he was Lars and James' puppet back in the day. I, personally, would have buried my fretboard up Hetfields puckered starfish if he told me how to play a solo... Just sayin...

Dave by a lot.
Dave writes and sings, too.
Dave v. Chuck Schuldiner would probably be a closer battle.

Both are strong evaluators of talent, especially since the talent they surround themselves with makes themselves look almost amateurish by comparison. Not a shot at either of them, but meant more as a compliment to the others.
