pick your favourite out of the three leaders of post metal and the three leaders of sludge metal (as i see it)
the most famous bands (left out Melvins and Neurosis) these are all related somehow, who is the best band of them |

It's gotta be either Isis or Cult of Luna. Never heard Pelican. Baroness and Kylesa come across as High On Fire clones. Mastodon are kind of like that too, but much more refined.

I'm voting Isis, but I really think you should reconsider leaving Neurosis out. I get that Cult of Luna and Pelican are probably more relevant nowadays, but Neurosis both helped father the subgenre and also released (arguably) its greatest album.

no i don't think i should reconisder anything , all these band are related in that they are almost same age, Neurosis beat them by 12 years, in my head it would by so wrong to have them in the poll,

^I think Mastodon is more like prog/thrash than sludge.

Like all these bands, some more than others.
Somewhere Along The Highway is among the best post-metal albums ever, but it's still not as good as Oceanic or Panopticon. Pelican would benefit from vocals IMO. Mastodon's latest album wasn't really up to their standards. Voted Isis. |

I'm more of a Sludge fan, so I gotta go with Kylesa. But I would have picked Melvins, had they been here.

I think just calling them "progressive metal" fits the bill. Some people say Dream Theater are progressive metal, but I don't find them to be all that progressive or all that metal....Mastodon fits the bill perfectly, though. EDIT: Dream Theater, and the like Edited by Nick Dilley - 19 Jun 2012 at 10:41pm |

Do you are saying that Mastodon is totally metal and totally prog at the same time?

There is zero thrash in anything they have done, even in Remission. Does not have the sound, style or attitude. "Hearts Alive" is sludge as fuck as is the rest of Leviathan.
