I mean, almost everything can be put into prog-attitude or punk-attitude categories.
Loads have both musics as an influence, but most chose one overall spirit more than the other. Motorhead, Nirvana, Drowning Pool, etc can fit into the punk attitude. Simple songs, less-is-more. Others like Metallica, QOTSA, Mudvayne, etc can fit into a prog attitude, avoiding making the same song twice and avoiding making the same song as anyone else is making. I guess a few people like early Megadeth and Type O Negative do both at the same time. I also have a theory that Punk was the most progressive music out there when it was new because it was deliberately different than prog, and prog had become a thing and so wasn't necessarily as progressive anymore. But thats another matter... |

It ultimately depends on what I'm listening to. I tend to often get bored by really simplistic music, though, so I'll go with the first option.

Middle of the Road. Heavy Metal of the 80's would be very deifferent if punk rock never happened. But I love prog, even prog with punk attitude! And prog is forward thinking again, despite the decadence of the 80.

That's like the basis of my views on prog. Not specifically punk, but in general any music that is deliberately new and fresh is prog to me. Sometimes it takes a while for the "sound" to be polished (even unpolished punk), but punk was a progressive shift in styles and a new direction for rock when it came out. ---- If you're interested in reading a semi-lenghty dissertation on the topic of "what is prog?" You can check out my blog: http://progressivediscussion.blogspot.com/ (4th entry is super long by necessity, but #1-#3 are all succinct, quick reads) ---- |

I tend like more bands with a punk attitude, like rawer production as opposed to clean, or more in your face. But I love plenty of bands with Prog attitude as well. Pink Floyd is probably my all time favortie band.
But as far as it goes, I've got to give it to the snotty kids with cheap equipment. You just can't beat stuff like this as far as intensity goes. Edited by Sheavy - 22 Jun 2012 at 3:29pm |

Punk was not about being progressive. Ramones (the first punk band) didn't try to do something new. They just tried to sound like their old favourites (Beatles, Chuck Berry), but played faster.
