The same could be said of USPM acts that were around in those days. A while ago I went through quite a few releases that are supposed to be unsung cornerstones of USPM. I found a lot were solid, but few releases that actually stood out as anything special. And I remember a few being kinda meh.

I was listening to a podcast the other day with H from Acid Reign talking to Harley Flanagan from the Cro-Mags, and he was talking about a phenomenon which I'd noticed too. Thrash bands which were considered b-grade or worse in the 80s are now raved about like they were almost up there with the Big 4, as if they were hidden gems. The example he gave was Demolition Hammer, and I have to agree - they weren't great, even at their peak.
Other bands I'd put in that category: Toxik EvilDead Atrophy Morbid Saint Mortal Sin That's not to say that there weren't bands from the 80s which were underappreciated. There were. The main point is, just because something was round in the 80s didn't necessarily mean it was any good.

I had a listen to Meanstreak's sole album yesterday. I have heard it a long time ago but too long to have any kind of familiarity. I found it really quite solid USPM/Thrash Metal.

^Yeah, I think Slab!'s frontman Stephen Dray has mentioned Swans as an influence. The whole album's fantastic, probably my favorite industrial metal album after Godflesh's Songs of Love and Hate. Their second album is pretty good too, though a bit less abrasive.

Love King Diamond and Artillery though I think they got better with age where as King Diamond did his best stuff in the 80's.

Death Angel's The Ultraviolence was mentioned upthread but I just wanted to reiterate how "80's sounding" that album is compared to most of their thrash contemporaries
and in the complete opposite direction, we have possible the first fully sludge metal album and some of the birth of black metal as we know it now great decade for metal and probably the first we really saw of extreme metal + lots of other branching out

I've updated my lists with my newest discoveries. Here's a couple from the last week:
Angel Dust - Into the Dark Past (1986) German speed/thrash metal. They later became a power metal band but this was my first taste from them. The vocals weren't anything special but suited the style well enough. I checked this one because RYM's speed metal definition listed it as a defining speed metal release along with the likes of Helloween's Walls of Jericho and Blind Guardian's Battalions of Fear. Original Sin - Sin Will Find You Out (1986) US speed metal. I actually only checked this as part of an evaluation for USPM here on MMA, but ended up putting them in as speed metal instead. This act's history was mostly fabricated, including their status as an all female band (only the singer was actually female), but the album itself I think was pretty kickarse 80's speed metal.

I updated the lists I put in the opening post with a few of my more recent 80's finds.
Tried early Accept (specifically the song Fast as a Shark) and couldn't get on with Udo Dirkschneider's voice.
