Believe it or not i voted for Buckethead. ALthough there are MANY great albums on this list (good job compiling this one), Somewhere Over THe Slaughterhouse was an album i found life changing in a cross pollinating genre type of way that still resonates with me to the present.
Toxiticy is a close second as that was life changing as well but not as so as BH (explains why i wasted my time reviewing over 100 plus albums!)

This is actually a tough one for me as I have several albums in the options that I've rated highly. I guess it would come down to between Opeth and Iced Earth but right now I really couldn't pick.
Others: Avantasia - The Metal Opera Elvenking - Heathenreel Hollenthon - With Vilest of Worms to Dwell Edited by adg211288 - 15 Feb 2016 at 1:43pm |

I'd forgotten a lot of those too Vic. Maybe not such a bad year after all! I just wasn't paying attention. |

Voted for System of a Down.
I also like Tool, Rammstein, Gamma Ray, Annihilator, Kamelot somewhat like Wages of Sin. And I'm missing quite a few favorites from 2001: I am missing the German triple thrash treat (M-16, Violent Revolution, The Antichrist), Absu's Tara and of course Bolt Thrower's Honour Valour Pride. Entombed - Morning Star (their best after the first three). I am also missing Ark - Burn the Sun, Beyond Twilight - The Devil's Hall of Fame and Devin Townsend's Terria. Excellent to good power metal albums: Destiny's End Transition, Onward's Evermoving, Jag Panzer's Mechanized Warfare, Brainstorm's Metus Mortis, Lost Horizon, Falconer and Avantasia. Not a bad year really.

I'm going to have to give my vote to Lateralus, but I have many favorites in this list.

Wages Of Sin. That was such a revelation when I first heard it. It sounded like Heartwork except it was good!
Hymns would be second on that list for me. I didn't buy it at the time, since good stuff like that is damn hard to find in NZ, but I got it a couple of years back. Intense, heavy, and thought provoking as ever. The rest of the list is a bit of a downer though. There's a couple of decent albums, like the Neurosis one, and Toxicity, which I skipped at the time but now appreciate. God Hates Us All is my least favourite Slayer album, and The World Needs A Hero is completely unremarkable. Most of the rest are bands I've never really got into, or avoided on purpose. In 2001 I was living in South Korea, and I was basically buying up cheap replacements for stuff I already had on tape, so I didn't get a lot of new stuff that year anyway. |
