All I remember about The Glorious Burden is I heard it once and pretty much hated the whole album, up until the three part sequence at the end, which I remember being absolutely increibly and some of the best stuff they've ever done. May be worth revisiting the album just to hear that suite again. Just like with Framing Armageddon, I pretty much dislike everything due to the vocals, except Ten Thousand Strong, where I find Tim fits in perfectly and it's again one of their best songs ever, imo, and easily the highlight of those two albums.
Edit: Posting this made me put on Ten Thousand Strong, and I probably will have to vote Framing Armageddon just for how damn good that one song is, and Crucible has nothing that really comes close to it. Edited by DippoMagoo - 29 Apr 2016 at 10:07am |

I never minded Tim's voice in Iced Earth's music, but I do agree that he wasn't the best fit. I do think that The Glorious Burden is an excellent album though, definitely the better one out of Tim's two with them.
Iced Earth are one of my favourite bands do my ratings for them do tend to be towards the higher marks, but yeah, these two albums are both on the lower end. To be honest I didn't think that their last one Plagues of Babylon was entirely up to standard either though, yet I loved Dystopia. All the same I'm hoping that Stu Block sticks around now as I find him much more suitable for their sound than Tim Owens (who I think is generally better in his own groups and not ones where he replaces an iconic frontman like Iced Earth and Judas Priest) and to my ears the whole Barlow reunion was a disaster for them.

I find both of them disappointing, tbh, both because of vocals. Framing Armageddon has the better songs,, but for some reason even though I usually like Tim "Ripper" Owens, I find he didn't fit in with the band at all and didn't enjoy either album with him all that much. At the same time, Crucible of Man has some weaker songs and Barlow sounded like he was phoning it in, especially when you compare his performnance there against the original Somewthing Wicked and on his recent Ashes of Ares album, where he sounded fresh and inspired as ever. I probably prefer Crucible, due to tolerating Barlow and relly disliking Owens with Iced Earth, but both are weak albums by Iced Earth standards, imo.

I consider Part 1 to have better songs overall. I also don't think Matt Barlow sounded up to his usual standard on Part 2 for some reason. It didn't help that his one album with Pyramaze was released the same year and he sounded his usual great self on that.
I've always kinda felt as well that Iced Earth fucked up these albums with everything going on in their line-up at the time. The change in vocalist alone means the concept lacks consistency, but they always said that they were going to re-do vocal tracks of Framing Armageddon with Matt just so listeners could have the complete experience with the same singer. In fact they said that the only reason they re-did the original Something Wicked trilogy with Tim was so fans could have that experience with the original three songs and two albums; then they go and change singer between the two albums and basically fuck it all up. They did do a few tracks as b-sides to the I Walk Alone single, but the boxset version of both albums with Matt was never released (that Box of the Wicked set just puts in the Tim Owens version of Framing Armageddon). Matt quits Pyramaze for Iced Earth, effectively fucking up that band until last year when they finally made their comeback, and then before we know it is out of Iced Earth for a second time. So what was that whole reunion for? There are no positives as I see it, just a whole bunch of negatives. The Crucible of Man is the weakest of the Barlow voiced Iced Earth albums to my ears as well.

I haven't heard these albums, but I do love Iced Earth. I'll need to have a listen through the Iced Earth discography sometime.

I listened to both of these albums today back-to-back. I think there's some good stuff on both albums. I'm surprised the 3 times I've seen Iced Earth live since these came out, they haven't played a single song off of either album. It's like Schaffer refuses to acknowledge their existence.
