Yeah voting finishes for the collabs on February 1st. I'll be tallying what everyone came up with after that and getting it formatted for the forum.

Will there be a collaborator's top albums of 2016?
So many albums I don't get the chance to hear, but if my non-collaborator vote can count for anything, maybe break a tie or something, my top-5 are: 1. Fates Warning - Theories Of Flight 2. Haken - Affinity 3. Theocracy - Ghost Ship 4. Insomnium - Winter's Gate 5. Amon Amarth - Jomsviking My likes/dislikes come from being a big prog/power metal fan, with '80s/hair-metal, a bit of melo-death metal and thrash added in. I know you guys already have that area covered, collaborator-wise.

This one just upset my top 20 and almost my top 10.
I enjoyed their debut from last year - one album I did manage a review for in fact - so was obviously looking forward to this, but I wasn't expecting it to be this good.

Metal albums of 2016 I really enjoyed so far (4 stars or more out of 5):

Just posted review number 60 for 2016, which I'm pretty proud of considering I only managed 37 for 2015 albums.
My summary of this year with two months to go is that it's been a good time for black metal but I haven't found so many really great releases from my other top genres. It's a rare year where my top 20 has more thrash metal than power metal, with 4 albums to 1. While some bands I've followed for a while have produced what I feel are their best albums this year, others have actually failed to crack my top 30 this time around, with Dream Theater being this year's disaster. There are still a lot of albums that I want to get reviewed, especially from band's I've previously bought stuff by or reviewed included Sinbreed, Hail Spirit Noir, Evergrey, Opeth, Avantasia and Headspace among others.
This is the updated ranking, with some albums positions changed around a bit since my last post. Albums marked with an * are free downloads (click on the album name).

I can't say honestly that any of the last three Evergrey albums have done that much for me. I mena, all seem pretty decent to listen to but none have had anything that's made me want to go back to them. Whever the mood strikes I usually turn to the stuff from between 1999 - 2004. I do quite like Torn as well though.

I just picked up the new Evergrey. A bit disappointed in it. It's a good album, as is every Evergrey album (well, maybe not MMA), but it doesn't blow my socks off.
I think they made a 'safe' album, they didn't really do anything new. And if anything, most of the songs have an upbeat, almost happy feel to them, where as Evergrey songs are usually darker, more sombre affairs.

^Yeah, that's also similar to what I've done this year, which explains my lower than usual numbers (by my standards: The list is still fairly big.) Basically, I only add albums to my list now after at least 3 listens, because that's the minimum amount required to be sure. I often will give more listens and maybe adjust the placements after that, but 3 listens is the absolute bare minimum required to make my lists now. Here's my updated rankings, including a few I've heard enough times but haven't ranked on RYM yet: 1. Dream Theater - The Astonishing 2. Temperance - The Earth Embraces Us All 3. Serenity - Codex Atlanticus 4. Oceans of Time - Trust 5. Dynazty - Titanic Mass 6. Mechina - Progenitor 7. Epica - The Holographic Principle 8. Equilibrium - Armageddon 9. Allegaeon - Proponent for Sentience 10. Vektor - Terminal Redux 11. Wisdom - Rise of the Wise 4.5 Stars: 12. Sabaton - The Last Stand 13. Hell in the Club - Shadow of the Monster 14. Hypersonic - Existentia 15. Trick or Treat - Rabbits' Hill Pt. 2 16. Rage - The Devil Strikes Again 17. Van Canto - Voices of Fire 18. Human Fortress - Thieves of the night 19. Evergrey - The Storm Within 20. Myrath - Legacy 21. Amon Amarth - Jomsviking 22. Winterstorm - Cube of Infinity 23. Sinbreed - Master Creator 24. Wings of Destiny - Kings of Terror 25. Twilight Force - Heroes of Mighty Magic 26. Far Beyond - A Frozen Flame of Ice 27. Akribi - Anima 28. Dyscordia - Words of Ruin 29. Wolverine - Machina Viva 30. I've given my 2016 list an overhaul and now I'm only including releases I'm sure about the rating of in my main list. So far for 2016 this is what I have, though I may still switch a few on the same rating tier around.

I wish I was a reviewer like some of you guys. I only get to hear what I buy, for the most part. Unless I borrow an album from a friend (if I like it, I buy it. If not, meh…), or maybe the rare whole-album listen on youtube.
So far in 2016: Airbourne - Breakin' Outta Hell Alcest Kodama Amon Amarth - Jomsviking Anciients - Voice Of The Void Anthrax - For All Kings Avantasia - Ghostlights Beyond The Black - Lost In Forever Circus Maximus - Havoc Dream Theater - The Astonishing Epica - The Holographic Principle Eternity's End - The Fire Within Evergrey - The Storm Within Fates Warning - Theories Of Flight Haken - Affinity Headspace - All That You Fear Is Gone Insomnium - Winter's Gate Kansas - The Prelude Implicit Katatonia - The Fall Of hearts Megadeth - Dystopia Myrath - Legacy Nightmare - Dead Sun Opeth - Sorceress Redemption - The Art Of Loss Sabaton - The Last Stand Serenity - Codex Atlanticus Sonata Arctica - The Ninth Hour Sunburst - Fragments Of Creation Theocracy - Ghost Ship Steven Wilson - //// 1/2 So far my top 3 are the Fates Warning, Haken, and Amon Amarth. That FW is even better than their last one. Maybe their best ever, imo, and I'm a big fan of their Perfect Symmetry/Parallels/Inside Out era.

Just updated my list. Up to 73 albums now. A few more and I'll have already matched the total number of 2015 albums I've heard. I think I'm back on form with new releases.

I know the thread title says "2016 in metal" but still, if something non-metal impresses me, I will mention it here. Bowie's last album is amazing. I forgot about Myrath's Legacy. I enjoyed quite a bit. |

the albums I've enjoyed so far Redemption - The Art of Loss Headspace - All That You Fear is Gone Artillery - Penalty by Perception Haken - Affinity Long Distance Calling - TRIPS Circus Maximus - Havoc The Jelly Jam - Profit (happy to see the guys back and rocking!) A Rebel Few - As The Crow Flies (for those that enjoy hard & Heavy, very enjoyable) Hexvessel - When We Are Death (vintage sounding rock, very good, the vocals especially) Lethal Steel - Legion of the Night (heavy metal, like it's 1985 ) Valerinne - Monumenta (experimental post metal, quite atmospheric) The Mute Gods - Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me (some kinda crossover prog, well played) Brimstone Coven - Black Magic (vintage sounding hard rock) Diamond head - s/t (I loved it, I read some negative opinions on it though, oh well, de gustibus...) Death Angel - The Evil Divide (I doubt anything metal wise will top this one for me) David Bowie - Blackstar Frequency Drift - Last (for those that like a little bit of prog) I still gotta listen to the new albums from Flotsam & Jetsam, Metal Church, Blood Ceremony, Poverty's No Crime. This year so far I have bought 18 albums that were released in 2016, not all metal. If I really like something I'll buy it but I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I'll end up getting that I haven't caught up on yet. There's a couple more on the way like the new Mortillery album. Below is anything I'd give 4 stars or more to (bands on the site only)...
Blood Ceremony - Lord of Misrule Megadeth - Dystopia Spiritual Beggars - Sunrise to Sundown Oceans Of Slumber - Winter Beastmaker - Lusus Naturae Artillery - Penalty by Perception Haken - Affinity Church of Misery - And Then There Were None King Crimson - Live In Toronto Some I have only played once like Chthe'ilist and Obscura may join the above after I've had chance to get to grips with them. Update - how did I miss out Vektor!

Time for my yearly thread I think. Share what you've enjoyed so far. As always, feel free to include anything we have on MMA, not just metal.
And don't forget that we have a List Challenge for 2016 releases so far. See what score you get. This is my list so far, as always any ratings I give without a review should be considered draft:
It's been a pretty good year for me so far, better than last year for certain. I've also found quite a number of decent free albums. Edited by adg211288 - 01 Jul 2016 at 2:53pm |
