I guess I see where you're coming from with that. It's very polished isn't it? I don't think that means it isn't black metal though. Melodic black metal is allowed to break away from the whole lo-fi thing. |

Winterhorde - Maestro is brilliant, though I tend to see it as more of an extreme progressive metal album than a black metal album.

Okay, got my CD of The Epigenesis today, so I've heard all of these now.
I ought to listen to some of them a second time before I actually register a vote but as things stand I think I'll be going for Windir's 1184. I love both Winterhorde but that 1184 is really hitting the spot right now.

Welcome Farewell is the only Vreid album I've heard as well. It's okay but I didn't think it was all that either. Windir is brilliant though. Just replayed Arntor and 1184 today. Upped my rating of the latter to a five as welll.

Listened to Enki - also brilliant. Not sure why Emissaries failed to grab since it seems to be their most well regarded album.

I've yet to hear Sóknardalr and Likferd but they're definitely high on the priorities list.
I agree about Vreid. I had a promo of Welcome Farewell (2013) that I rated positively but it's never made me rush to check out their other work or even go back to the album itself.

Both those Windir albums are definitely very good. All four are actually. I should dig them out again.
Valfar was a real loss for black metal. The band the other guys formed after his death, Vreid, are okay but I never got into them enough to buy an album. |

I'm thinking this Windir one, 1184, could be a five star for me. The track Destroy in particular is an absolute beast.

For some reason Melechesh's Emissaries didn't actually grab me as much as either of the two albums I'd listened to already. I've actually got The Epigenesis on order because I found that one cheap online, so I'm going to wait until the CD comes to hear it. Tomorrow I'll probably check out Enki though.

The two Windir albums are both very good. I'd heard Arntor before but liked it more this time around, and I loved 1184 right off the bat. Not sure they'll upset Winterhorde for me yet, but both are now pretty high on my black metal wishlist.

I guess I should make an effort to check Melechesh out before voting on this. I've heard every other album in this except any of theirs.
As things currently sit I'd probably vote for Kvist. That album's more split between melodic black and regular black metal compared to the rest that I've heard though. |

I've heard two. The Epigenesis - Melechesh, and that Dissection one. Hated Dissection. Love Melechesh. Very simple.

Emissaries no question, my all-time favorite black metal album next to Absu's Tara.

A black metal poll I've heard enough of to vote. I'll go for Dissection.

I'll hold off on this until I've heard the ones on the list I haven't yet: everything here is on the priority listen list. Right now I'd be torn between the two Winterhorde albums.

Black metal poll #3. Melechesh are ruling the current chart (understandable). I've actually heard all of these and love them all. My vote however goes to Underwatermoon by Winterhorde.
