Wouldn't call myself the biggest Marillion fanboy in the world, but i do think that they have some pretty awesome stuff. Some of my favorites include the obvious; Clutching at Straws, Script for a Jester's Tear, and Misplaced Childhood. Also I quite enjoy Brave, though most of the other Hogarth-era stuff doesn't interest me at all. On that debate I am definitely on the Fish-era side.

I dig Marillion for sure. I like most of what I own of theirs, but I haven't been so pulled in to feel the need to explore their entire discography. I own:
- Fugazi - Misplaced Childhood - Clutching at Straws - B Sides Themselves - Season's End - Afraid of Sunlight - This Strange Engine (I'd say this one's my least favorite, but it was my first Marillion album) I'm also rather familiar with the debut, which my brother owns. |

Interesting that Fugazi is your favorite... that one never really "clicked" with me like many other Marillion albums did. And, yes, Fish's lyrics are amazing across the board. It's impossible to listen to some of his lyrics and not be moved. 
And proud of it too.  If I have time this weekend I may write a 5 star review for Brave on Prog Archives. |

It might surprise some people but I�m a giant Fish-era Marillion fan. Those first four albums are some of my alltime favorite albums ( regardless of which genre we�re talking about). Simply unique and amazing stuff. "Fugazi (1984)" is probably my favorite. I�ve heard three or four albums with Steve Hogarth and I didn�t particularly enjoy them. I simply don�t like his voice very much and the music also stopped appealing to me. Seasons End is the album I�m mostly familiar with from that era but also Marbles and Brave.
Fish is truly a unique vocalist but his lyrics are also of extremely high quality. One of my favorite Fish lyrics are the lyrics for "Punch And Judy" from "Fugazi". It�s not often you hear a song about relationships/ the everyday lives of couples delivered with such conviction without ever turning out banale. The man is simply a genious with words if you ask me. I mean who else can sing a songline like "Who forgot to flush the loo" without sounding ridiculous. There�s a deep melancholy yet also great humour in his lyrics that is unique.
Another favorite Fish moment is this part of the lyrics for "Blind Curve" from "Misplaced Childhood (1985)":
"Another holiday inn, another temporary home And an interviewer threatened me with a microphone 'talk to me, won't you tell me your stories.' So I talked about conscience and I talked about pain And he looked out the window and it started to rain I thought maybe I've already gone crazy So I reached for a bottle and he reached for the door And I picked up the sleeping pills crushed on the floor Inviting me to a casual obscenity" Again the melancholy and how the words are delivered just touches me deeply everytime I listen to that song.
Or how about "Incubus" from "Fugazi":
"The darkroom unleashes imagination in pornographic images
In which you will always be the star, always be the star, untouchable Unapproachable, constant in the darkness Nursing an erection, a misplaced reaction With no flower to place before this gravestone And the walls become enticingly newspaper thin But that would be developing the negative view And you have to be exposed in voyeuristic colour The public act, let you model your shame On the mannequin catwalk, catwalk Let the cats walk, and the cat walks I've played this scene before, I've played this scene before I the mote in your eye, I the mote in your eye A misplaced reaction, satisfaction" Edited by UMUR - 11 Mar 2011 at 3:23pm |

Marillion only released two good albums IMO: Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws. The rest is meh.

This is a thread where all MARILLION fans can unite!
 Here's where we can discuss their music in general, specific albums, the infamous H vs. Fish debate, live shows, etc. etc.I've been on a Marillion binge lately... one of their albums has been finding its way into my rotation almost every day for the last month. Simply one of my favorite bands from any genre. I love all eras of the band dearly... almost every one of their albums is either a 4.5 or 5 star rating from me.Did someone say fanboy?  |
