Went with Inception, but it could have been V for Vendetta also. I'm wondering now if I didn't put my vote in the wrong place. Especially since I just did a double take and the question was best film of the 00's. Inception is the 10's.
District 9 was also very good. Some good ones not on the options are Moon, The Road and Iron Man, if you're willing to count superhero films.

The two front-runners for me; Inception followed by V.

They are both dystopian films. Dystopia is not so much a sub-genre but closely related form of fiction to science fiction (like fantasy or horror) so it's not uncommon for such films to be included in sci-fi lists.

V for Vendetta is an amazing movie. Love it.
Children of Men had a nice dark atmosphere, but it´s not a favorite of mine. Inception was pretty cool. |

I wouldn't call V for Vendentta sci-fi. Or Children of Men (loved this one).
Equilibrium is a great sci-fi, quite underrated, worth watching).

^Actually, there's many things very similar to Avatar... but just made before Avatar! Thanks for the link Bartosso!
Anyways, Balthamel is right: visually, Avatar is excellent. And still the best movie to utilize the 3D technology. But I've expected more from James Cmeron (a great sci-fi/action filmmaker). |

Since we're on the subject, I've recently read a short story by Poul Anderson and found it suspiciously similar to Avatar. Then I found this: http://www.slashfilm.com/is-james-camerons-avatar-actually-an-uncredited-rewrite-of-a-1957-poul-anderson-story/
The short story is actually much better than the movie. |

I think the poll is a faild one (if you plan to have the landmark sci fi movies from the 00s) for not have included Avatar,, you might not like it but it is wha it is. the most spoked and one very important movie in the genre, maybe not storywise but must certanly graphicly and visullay

^But the movie is not so good than the graphic novel. A true masterpiece.

V For Vendetta....by a country mile. Set in dystopian England and similar in some respects to Orwell's 1984. Famous for this quite incredibly written quote and spoken by "V" (Hugo Weaving) the main character. V: But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace sobriquet, to suggest the character of this dramatis persona. Sheer brilliance! Watch it if you can |

I actually quite like "Star Trek: Nemesis" from 2002. It's very dark and different.
