I tend to keep a rotating playlist of specifically selected songs that bring me up when I've had a bad day (or when I just know it's going to be one).  It's not that I need this to cope, mind you.  It just suits me, if that makes any sense.

I'm not an angry person and I listen to metal. I never really pay attention to emotions and what sorts of metal I listen to.

That might be true for some people, but for me and I believe the more common way of seeing it is "I want to smash something/hit someone, but I'll rather get it out of me listening to metal".

Sure, without doubt. I don't think that's much of a surprise.
However, as I've gotten older I really don't use it as much as an outlet as I used to. I just like it.
Several have questioned: how can you be so objective? or How can you just like it?

I like heavy guitarHeadbanger that's simple. I like the technicality, the musicianship, metal is just good music. Even the more extreme "angry" types I admire for its technical skill.
I pretty much do listen to whatever at any time and any mood.
As for being in an angry/pissed off mood. Sometimes thrash metal, sometimes post metal, sometimes really chill music! It just depends.

I did notice over the summer I did listen to far less metal and it was generally "lighter" stuff.
While Agalloch, for example, I would listen to but FAR less than at this time of year. I don't think about it...just, the weather I guess. With it being warm and nice I was way into Pink Floyd and less heavy stuff. With it being cooler and more...dreary (grim?) I just feel Agalloch and heavier/darker stuff more!
Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal!

Listen to doom metal, worship Satan

I listen to it, because I love it... I have found, however, that Slayer is very effective against anger and bad mood.

Writing music - now that's different - I find that the many genres of metal provide great possibilities to give vent to all sorts of emotions and constructively challenging them into the creative process.

That's my case anyway, and I must admit that I was terribly stressed and depressed for the last couple of weeks (no worries, I'm okay nowWink).

Still, sometimes, I listen to aggressive music just to make it an outlet for my anger. Very effective! I think that absolutely everyone has his own anger inside and should find an outlet for it from time to time. Some death metal (or even metalcore) works miracles! That's why those death metal guys are such cool guys, they're always relaxed because they're channeling their anger into the public every fucking day on tour.

Couldn't have said it better! Clap

I tend to listen to whichever new music I'm into that month regardless of what emotion I feel. Maybe I'm the odd one out here.

I never understood the 'metal makes me want to smash something/hit someone' mentality, I always assumed it was just marketing/gimmicky for bad journalists to hook in impressionable 13 year olds... it never for a second occurred to me that these people weren't talking out of their ass.

There is a chance I could be wrong and just never stopped long enough to consider it might be true.

I guess that might be the case for some people, but I've never felt that way. I'm exceptionally happy with my life (probably more than ever before), and I also am more into death metal and black metal than I was a few years ago. I know lots of people like to equate extreme metal with angry misanthropes, but I've never felt that way. Smile

Do you listen to more metal or different kinds of metal when you're angry, pissed off, depressed?

I realized a while ago that even though I nowadays listen to more metal than I have done in years, much of it has some kind of a positive vibe to it, and the more extreme styles of metal don't really speak to me anymore. I think there's a straight correlation with how much I enjoy my personal life today. I listened to a lot angrier music when I was working a crap job or going through the military service.

Any thoughts?
