Nope. I will often avoid prog stuff if I can. I like metal in general, but I'd have to say thrash, death, grindcore are my favourites, and I'll give most things a go.

No, not even close. I enjoy some bands from all forms of metal, but my favorites are Thrash, Industrial, Old School Death, Classic Heavy Metal, Funk, and Grunge/Stoner.

Picking up on a couple of themes here. I grew up on the likes of Sabbath, Maiden, Priest as well as heavy rock acts like Lizzy, Zep, AC/DC and Queen before embracing the thrash bands of the 80s. It was always the clever wankery that I really got off on though and as the years flew by, it was prog and especially progressive metal that rocked for me. As others have said, our tastes change, may be when we expose ourselves to music outside of our comfort zones.
That said, I'm more likely to be listening to some progressive death, black, metalcore, grind or AG band than a band in the prog metal bucket. I do love the generic prog metal bands, but progressive metal is a lot wider than Fates Warning and DT. And there's some great rocking progressive shit that falls way outside of this site's span too! I love progressive music in general but by "progressive" I mean unusual, fresh, intricate etc. I can't see almost anything interesting in DT's music despite the fact it's one of the most important prog metal bands and the most popular for sure. So yes, I think it's the genre I listen to most of the time, but I prefer those modern eclectic prog metal bands over these, well, "mainstream" ones. Opeth is a definition of modern progressive metal to me, and while they've fought their way to prog metal mainstream, they developed and defined a new branch of prog metal, very different from what an average Joe would associate with "prog metal" tag.
I'm not sure if it's my favourite metal genre though... let's be honest, is there anything more beautiful than solid blast beat, thickened with hellish growl and skull-crushing riff? I don't think so

EDIT: The good side of prog metal (and prog music in general) is that this genre can be combined with EVERY other subgenre of metal! Edited by Tupan - 04 Mar 2012 at 7:56am |

As much as I love prog metal (DT and FW are among my favorite bands), I can't say that it's the metal subgenre that I love the most. I like a lot of other metal subgenres equally, as I think they have a lot of different things to offer.... so I voted no.

My favorite kind of music is extreme prog metal. So, if you mean together with this side of prog metal, then yes. But I didn't vote. I wait an answer to vote.

In terms of metal I think I like Thrash the most, then Stoner, then Metalcore, then maybe Nu or Classic Metal (Priest, Maiden, Ozzy, Dio era Sabbath).
I only like a bit of Death (only about 20 albums) and barely any Black at all. No Grindcore bar Napalm Death. I don't know any Prog Metal (DT, PW, FW, Queensryche) of the enclosed sub genre at all, but like metal bands who are a bit/lot Prog (Tool, Mastodon, Mars Volta) but dont fit in that original genre. But Prog Rock from the 68-85 period I love, thats a huge percentage of my music collection, along with classic rock. |

Like Kim I generally avoid worrying about genre tags, but I'd be lying if I said that most of my favorite albums don't lie in the prog metal spectrum.

as a member of the sludgy slime fest club i have to say no, but i like the sludge metal to be on the progy side of things, but also on the dirty/gritty side of things, sludge with dose of grunge and post-punk influences is neat to,
music with dark post punk influence is equaly interesting (if that exists) |

Nope, I don't really have one. It's up there, but I can't say I like it more than thrash, death, or power metal.
