Fishbone was voted down, they're a great band but metal is just a small element they throw in the stewpot, not part of their basic sound.

We're gonna do a little number featuring Randy Rhoads...

I guess I would say thats fair
(but would others?) though "Soul Craft" by Bad Brains was crossover
album for them, Hardcore is a form of Crossover, but hey, I dont want to
get into a genre fight

no, unfortunately there is no funk-metal category. There is an "alternative" metal sub-category which will include alternative rock bands, grunge bands and funk-metal bands.
Badbrains are hardcore. There is no "hardcore" sub-category, but "metal"core which is not exactly where I would put badbrains, sick of it all, biohazard, agnostic front and all other hardcore bands.

Is there a "Funk Metal" sub-catagory somewhere?
Fishbone could be there with Mordred, Mind Funk, 24/7 Spyz, Faith No More, Ignorance, Living Colour, etc
Primus and Bad Brains may fit in about 3 or 4 other catagories

lots of those examples of 'prog rock' crossovers... most famous example was The Police ..two thirds of the group were 'prog' before joining the group. what is really interesting are the stylistic differences... prog really isn't a music style.. it is whatever you want to throw in the kitchen sink... done in 7/8... with lyrics about D&D or inner exploration

All I have to do is glance at that Black Flag logo and I'm right back there ... California hardcore!!!!
btw Re Fishbone's original guitarist (forgot his name) the other thing about his playing is that he is always playing metal in Fishbone, even when the band is playing other styles, listen to him, you can hear his suburban roots in the world of Van Halen, the rest of the band is from south central. Please excuse the name dropping, but he jammed with my acid jazz band at a gig in SF (after he quit Fishbone), his jazz chops are through the roof. |
there is often many layers to these players than what the public sees i guess. like Mick Mars from the Crue... by all accounts (haven't heard any of the music)... he is quite the blues guitarist. Quite the far cry from Motley Crue..

Oh yeah, Fishbone are discussed. I passed the dinner residues over to the alt team here to choke upon a few days ago, and after removing some Truth and Soul they are discussing it :-)

I know the Alt. Metal team is discussing them, though I have been out all morning and a bit of the afternoon, so I haven't looked at the team discussions yet. BTW, welcome to MMA, fellow Admin !

I think Fishbone is already being discussed, so excuse me if I am being redundant, but I thought i would point out that although they are an eclectic band, when they do play metal it is with authority, not as a dilletente. Their first and founding guitarist was a straight up metal head.
