If youre looking for amplified horns, take a listen to the King Kong track on Uncle Meat (1969) by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

I'm sure there is something a bit more like the 3 above but, heres my take . . .
Just bring in Coletrane instead of Miles and remove Singer (though they also have a Female Vocalist at times): |

It would be pretty awesome exept for the fact that Chuck is dead, and i don't know about Miles Davis.

^ That just gave me an interesting thought, Brian.
What the hell would a band with Chuck Schuldiner, Roine Stolt, and Miles Davis sound like? |

Prog Death Fusion would be the best thing since...well...prog? It would be so cool ecspecially if the band could get their hand on some electronic saxes'. That would be cool.

Carcass' "Necroticism" - a masterpiece and certainly qualifies as prog death metal :-)
Also, check out the Danish 90 underground death metal act Cyanotic. They were more of a melodic death metal act, but their early stuff was also kind of prog - especially a track called "Eclipsed Existence". Check out their Myspace page and scroll down towards the last tracks in the player. http://www.myspace.com/cyanoticdk |

I say YES to Prog Death Fusion!
Okay Math Lab Students! Are you readddy teww rrrRRRochh! . . . yeah me too. So yeah, again, I'm gonna' put these up with a List of other Tech-Thrash/Death/Math Metal mad scientists when I have less projects to work on, so bare with me as the goal will be before 2113 (Thats when the Solar Federation has been destroyed). This will be Part 1 because I have a HUGE list (I'm sticking with the Death Metal theme here, or what was considered Death Metal the time it was released). Note: These are in various degrees and styles of "Technicality", listeners aggression is advised. Also, some these have multiple styles of vocals. Give yourselves some time to listen throughout a song, because moods change throughout any given track, especially for bands you may have heard of or checked out before but never got the "whole picture", sit back and enjoy the technical carnage. PART I (In no order): 1. Necrophagist (2004): 2. Meshuggah (1995): 3. Rosicrusian (1994): 4. Extol (2000): (these guys were very much ahead of their time, 4 to 5 different vocal styles from "1" singer and . . . Christians from Norway!) 5. Mourning Sign (1996): 6. Loudblast (1993): 7. Special Defects (1997): 8. Carcass ("Necroticism" to "Heartwork" era) (1993): 9. Sabbat (u.k.) (More-so "Dreamweaver") (1989): (Probably one of the 1st Thrash/Death Metal bands to add Pagan/Folk with technicality. Also the "Shakespearian/Dickens" Old English lyrics are unmatched since John Arch's unique lyrics w/Fates Warning!) 10. Oppressor (1996): (One of the MOST overlooked great Tech-Math/Death Metal bands! Now we have some great bands from the past few years doing what Oppressor did more than a decade('s) ago). 11. Darkane (2001): Okay thats Part 1, I'll work on Part 2 when more folks put up more or if I killed the Thread . . . . till next time Edited by MAVIIIVAM - 06 Sep 2010 at 3:44am |

I also have to mention the latest album by Ihsahn, After. It's one of the best albums I've heard this year. Definitely very proggy, and some jazz I suppose (some tracks feature sax).

I'll be curious to see some suggestions. Often when I hear a band that mixes jazz fusion with death metal, the result sounds too forced.
That being said, I'm a big fan of Death and Cynic, but the only Death album with an obvious jazz influence is Human. Atheist is cool too, especially Unquestionable Presence. I like some of what I've heard from Pestilence, but not as much as the others I've mentioned. One band/album that somewhat qualifies would be Quo Vadis and their Defiant Imagination album. Not overly jazzy, but they are highly influenced by Death (who were mentioned earlier). Steve Digiorgio even plays on the album. |

Obscura: "Cosmogenesis"
It's tech and kind of progressive - there are some baroque tendencies and their bass player is a flamengo jazz bassist who also performed in Pestilence's "Spheres". There's not a lot of jazz influence, but it surely qualifies as progressive death metal. |
