I would vote for PROTO. Just because it's in that category doesn't diminish its progressiveness.

There are many dubious categorizations i have found.

One is that STEVE VAI is hard rock. Really? Maybe with David Lee Roth or Whitesnake, but much of his stuff is experimental, progressive and eclectic.

BUCKETHEAD is listed mostly as metal-related but i would place him under Avant-Garde Metal

Yeah I´m not completely sure it should be placed in progressive metal and not in proto, but it´s been discussed before and I´m not sure why it was concluded that it should be placed in progressive.
