DT13 at #9? ewwwww
Very good list, though. Nice to see Motorpsycho and Liminal high up. The PA list shared a lot of chart-toppers.

Well, I'm pretty sure no one is entirely satisfied with the results, as no one had Riverside as their top 1, but I honestly think that there's no reason to question them. Let's face it, MMA has never been a "true to the bone" metal site, in fact, I can't imagine a more flexible site than ours, when it comes to evaluating what should be included here and what shouldn't. Riverside winning the CAOTY is just a natural consequence of that approach.

The rules were that albums included had to be on MMA. There weren't any restrictions placed on releases within Metal Related sub-genres (MR, HR, H&C, proto), as the idea of having this section of MMA is that releases within are of interest to metal fans, so it's perfectly legitimate for a MR release to have won, even if it seems it was placed incorrectly for some time (which I'm about to fix) and in my opinion its even validation for the sub being here. Am I happy it won? Not really, nothing I've heard from the band when they were producing more metal oriented work convinced me that they were anything more than passable, but they did win fair and square.

Well since we also embrace metal-related releases/artists (and the new Riverside does even feature a metal riff or two ), there is a risk that the Collabs pick is a release that´s not necessarily that "metal".

Strange outcome, how is the winning album even metal? It's ballad pop with the some sparse hard-rock thrown in. Boo! |

Kinda surprised the new Riverside won.
It's a pretty good album, but not a greatalbum, and not even their best one, imo. Good post though, I'm youtubing some of the list I haven't heard of as I type this. That Leprous sounds pretty good Tried to listen to more of that Kayodot, and I just don't get it (again). Not a fan, I guess. |

Actually I thought Kayo Dot was going to nab this all the way through putting the votes into a spreadsheet for adding up. Riverside proved a bit of a dark horse though - didn't top any individual list, but was included pretty high up on most that did include it.
I've only actually heard six of these that made it to the top 20 this year (15 out top 50), but I'm definitely intrigued by that Gorguts album in particular now. Here's the the rest of the fully top 50 for those interested: 21. Vaura - The Missing (91 Points) 22. James LaBrie - Impermanent Resonance (75 Points) 23. Fen - Dustwalker (71 Points) 24. Lalu - Atomic Ark (69 Points) 24. The Prophecy - Salvation (69 Points) 26. Death Angel - The Dream Calls for Blood (67 Points) 27. The Ocean - Pelagial (63 Points) 28. Alice in Chains - The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (61 Points) 29. Summoning - Old Morning's Dawn (59 Points) 30. Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor (58 Points) 31. Coheed & Cambria – The Afterman Descention (56 Points) 32. Karnivool - Aysmmetry (54 Points) 33. Procession - To Reap Heavens Apart (53 Points) 33. Vandroya - One (53 Points) 35. Dark Design - Prey for the Future (52 Points) 36. Deep Purple - Now What!? (50 Points) 36. Jinetes Negros - Tawa Sarira (50 Points) 36. Satan - Life Sentence (50 Points) 39. Cloudkicker - Subsume (48 Points) 39. Omnium Gatherum - Beyond (48 Points) 39. Rotting Christ - Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy (48 Points) 39. SubRosa - More Constant than the Gods (48 Points) 39. The Dillinger Escape Plan - One of Us is the Killer (48 Points) 44. Amorphis - Circle (47 Points) 44. Guapo - History of the Visitation (47 Points) 46. Grayceon - Pearl & The End of Days (46 Points) 46. Illusion Suite - The Iron Cemetery (46 Points) 46. Satan's Host - Virgin Sails (46 Points) 46. Soilwork - The Living Infinite (46 Points) 50. Russian Circles - Memorial (45 Points) I was actually putting results together all day on the first since I also had my own site to add up, and we run more than just a best albums poll. I think I need a break from the computer now to give my hands a rest.

After the first 7 or 8 lists were posted, Hubardo looked like potentially #1 overall (which would probably be silly given how avant-garde it is). But then a bunch of other lists got posted. |

Riverside is a band you love despite their faults, just like a retarded child (oupss, political correctness failure). I agree with some of the criticism they receive, but still, they're so disarmingly genuine in what they do, that I can blink at these little shortcomings. Maan, I just love these guys |

Heh, I'm probably out of step with folks here because I've never rated Riverside especially highly and their latest album didn't inspire me to change my mind on that score, but nice to see some of my picks (Haken, Darkthrone, Cult of Luna, Carcass, Leprous) getting into the top spots.

Fantastic and, most of all, really quick work, Adam. I didn't expect to see this so soon!
And woah, Riverside won, I didn't see that coming. Good album for sure, even though not flawless and not that metal ^^ And I thought Hubardo would end up higher... still a good list, though.

Good job, Adam. I'm embarrased to say I've yet to hear the Riverside. I'll be sure to get some of their stuff in the near future as I'd heard a few of their songs lately (and enjoyed them) while bouncing around on Youtube.
