I am not very well versed in 80's metal but what I have heard from it has been very good. I decided to make this thread as a central place here on MMA where 80's metal recommendations can be fired back and forth between each other.
I personally enjoy traditional, speed, power (both Euro and US) and thrash the most and appreciate any recommendations in that line that are thrown my way. If you have Rate Your Music, you can also directly suggested releases to my series of 80's lists. To kick start this I'm going list what I do know. I'm sure there's a lot I'm missing out on.

I already recommended a couple bands on RYM, Here's some more I can think of:
Thrash metal: Anthrax (One of my favorite bands of all time, the most underrated among the big 4) Kreator Annihilator Testament Voivod Overkill Exodus Artillery Suicidal Tendencies Celtic Frost Flotsam and Jetsam White Zombie Traditional: Ozzy Osbourne (Solo stuff) Warlock (Already recommended) Metal Church (Already recommended) Yngwie Malmsteen Prog: Queensryche Watchtower Those are all the bands I can think of right now, there are probably more though. If you're interested in Industrial, I can give you a few suggestions for that. Edited by Unitron - 06 Jul 2015 at 11:28am |

Watchtower (first two albums). Pretty much the birth of tech/prog metal, but with thrashy leanings.
Realm (MA has them as Technical Thrash/Power Metal).
Heathen and Forbidden. I can especially recommend Twisted Into Form by the latter.
Target
Artillery
Mercyful Fate
King Diamond

Annihilator - I had them on my list already for 1989. Voivod - I've been meaning to try this band for a while now; I have some of their stuff saved to Spotify but I did forget to add them to my RYM lists check out sections. Testament Overkill I've heard bits of both of these are enjoyed them so I'll definitely be keeping them in mind. Artillery I actually have their most recent as a promo and liked it. I'm most interested in hearing their By Inheritance album next but Spotify doesn't have it. Industrial metal doesn't really interest me beyond Rammstein, but I didn't make this thread to be just about recommendations for me so if you want to put up some 80's industrial recommends you go right ahead.
Realm sounds interesting with that tagging. I already know Heathen but not their 80's stuff. King Diamond is another one I've had on my radar to try out for a while now.

White Zombie is another band you should check out, 'Make Them Die Slowly' and 'God of Thunder' are both awesome thrash releases from 89.

White Zombie is good.
Annihilator I find very average, they just don't click with me. If you want a good 80's Thrash album get Morbid Saints Spectrum of Death. Makes Reign in Blood sound like its being played at half speed :D |

Bands I didn't see mentioned that I've rated at least 3 stars in the past (often their later releases are better)
Motörhead Fates Warning Virgin Steele Queensrÿche Pestilence Heaven's Gate Stratovarius |

The 80's was a great decade for metal and you have already discovered some excellent albums. Bands/albums I'd recommend not on your list would be....
Y & T - Earthshaker is a good place to start. Accept - Restless and Wild Scorpions - Blackout Hughes/Thrall - self-titled Streets - 1st (features Kansas vocalist Steve Walsh and guiarist Mike Slammer) Dokken - Tooth and Nail Mercyful fate - Don't break The Oath Ratt - Out Of The Cellar (if you fancy some good glam metal) Black n Blue - Nasty Nasty (as above) Armored Saint - Delirious Nomad king Diamond - any but Abigail is a good place to start. Artillery - terror Squad M.A.R.S. - project driver Metal Church - The dark Waysted - Save Your Prayers Bathory - Blood Fire Death Exodus - Fabulous Disaster or Pleasures of the Flesh Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence Kreator - terrible certainty Forbidden - Forbidden Evil Vicious Rumors - Vicious Rumors Voivod - Killing Technology Morbid Angel - Altars Of madness I'm sure I've missed out loads but there's quite a range of sub-genre's there. |

I quite like Vicious Rumors' debut actually. I think their first four albums are all good but then it took them until Warball to make something excellent again. Especially don't like the 1996 - 2001 release period.

^ There's a couple of those mid period albums I haven't heard to be honest. Must have knocked them pretty hard losing Carl Albert in such tragic circumstances I guess. The last 2 have been good though aswell.

I disliked the more groove metal based sound they took during that time. They returned to playing USPM with Warball though, fortunately.

I second that album, amazing stuff. 'Russian Roulette' is another one of my favorites from them.
