Just finished it. Hell of an album and also one of those rare releases where I don't even know where to begin on genre voting for it on RYM.

Exactly, it draws on so many sub-genres and can't really sit comfortably in only one.

^It´s pretty consistent in style and sound though, so the many influences doesn´t affect coherence, which is something I usually think is important.

Yeah I don't know exactly what to call it either, though death metal would be low on the list of possibles.

Well it certainly isn´t Black either, so that leaves a couple of other genres like doom and prog that aren´t quite right either.

Haven't heard it, but maybe Avant-garde would be a good fit if it's simply too eclectic?

Haven't heard it either, so it may be AG, but please don't fall into the same trap as others have done in equating avant-garde and eclectic. AG is often eclectic, but eclectic doesn't mean avant-garde. They're very different.

Perhaps it's just a heavy metal album with lots of influences? Not all trad sounds like Iron Maiden?

Definitely not what I regard as avant garde, and it´s too extreme to be placed in trad. IMO.

So glam is out of the question too I suppose Wink

You've reeled me in - I'll need to give this album a spin.

Heavy Metal is actually it's most voted up primary tag on RYM though.

I'm intrigued by it too so I'll evaluate it for the sub when I check it out.

I personally don´t agree with artists being placed in trad. when they predominantly use extreme vocals. We had a similar discussion with Swansong by Carcass. But as always it´s just an opinion, and if everyone else thinks trad. or something else is a better fit than death metal, then so be it.

Neither do I. I made a point of kicking any such artists out of the sub when I went through it a little while back.

Perhaps RYM's other primary, gothic metal, would be more appropriate?

I´m not sure I think goth is the right place either, but I´d be interested to hear what you think, if you get a chance to listen to it.

To my ears it has elements of trad, black, death and gothic without leaning strongly towards any one in particular. I would definitely steer clear of placing it in trad too and think gothic might not be a bad place as there's not really enough black or death for either of those subs.

I did listen to it at the weekend. Definitely not for trad heavy to my ears. Gothic perhaps, but I'm certainly not an expert on all the different types of gothic metal. Wouldn't call it black metal either. I'd say it's more blackened than actual black metal. With that said, I do get more of a black metal vibe off of it than death metal.

All told it's certainly an interesting release. I'll definitely be listening to it again.

Loving this debut from Firespawn at the moment. Not all a blur of blastbeats and plenty of groove not to mention some killer riffs. They feature members of Unleashed, Entombed and Defleshed.

Bit of a slow start this year for great death metal releases, where are they all?

This is good - best I've heard this year so far...

Listen to the Enthean debut I reviewed recently when it drops. I think that's a pretty awesome album.
