In my case, it's actually neither. My hearing is very good, and one of my favourite singers of all time is Glenn Hughes - whose voice tends to be quite high-pitched, as I am sure you know very well. I just don't like LaBrie's style, even if on Images and Words his vocals are tolerable in comparison to the rest of the band's output. I suppose it all boils down to personal taste. |

And here I thought my hearing was good too, hmm . . . -wha?
Over 30 years listening to Heavy Metal and collecting Albums = an experienced skilled labourer . I think something has been happening here at MMA too, knowing "music terminology" automatically makes you an "expert" on what "Heavy Metal should sound like", well I dont have a tin ear and I do play Guitar, even though I cant read like most Guitarists or play (most) others music, but I can improvise my own . . . and I think thats more original (thats what folks keep telling me ). Most of what I play is influenced by Metal, but by no means is it conventional. And Raff, how DARE you! "Personal taste"!? TREASON!!! I like Duda and Wilson very much, and I was actually upset that DT let Dominici go because I purchased WDADU when it debuted. But I acknowledge now that LaBrie "is" (imo) the voice of DT. But I would never call Dominici's voice on that album bland, it was his vocals that set the tone for all the musicianship on their 1st outing for me. Glenn Hughes laid down some varied styles with Coverdale in the Deep Purple days, and his work with (2?) Iommi and Sabbath, I like him very much. To me its all more a variety for Heavy Metal, its either I like or do not like . . . thats all . But hey, Lucas, to each his own . Edited by MAVIIIVAM - 18 Jul 2010 at 4:08pm |

Hey prog metal fans, anyone heard the russian band Mechanical Poet. On the fabulous french website guts of darkness their music is described as a cross between 'Harry Potter' and Pain Of Salvation, which is quite fair as they have a strong symphonic side on one hand and the vocalist switches easily from "quiet' to "harsh" and the "metal" music (as opposed to the symphonic one) bears some similarities with PoS on the other hand. I quite enjoy their album 'woodland prattlers' (I listened to it twice during my jogging)
Not sure their other albums are on par with this one. Edited by lucas - 16 May 2010 at 6:53pm |

Sounds very emo, a cross between Coldplay and Talk Talk (at least the only song I heard from them, see below). This performance was made during semifinal for EUROVISION (!!!!!) : from the obscure prog/alternative metal band to the mass appealing pop band ????

Yeah but . . .
You know, I had this idea, that if I had a Metal Band (Math Metal or Prog Metal), "we'd" write "1 Pop song" and that would "bring in a revenue" and exposure, but the rest of our material would be aggressive complex "Metal". I'm sure this has happened before (The Band Filter comes to mind). But the thing is with PoS, we know their history of Music, this is a way to expose the "heart" of the band that is more aggressive, but they are a band that never shyed away from ballad-like songs, usually they'd get a bit aggressive or "musical" within it. I'm actually on the mailing list of Eurovision as well, have you "seen" and heard the other bands, all the damned cliche's about "Euro Groups" musically and the way they dress! Like an East German Block/Soviet 1980's Band! What decade is it again? As far as the new stuff, I have not heard the "Album" Road Salt, I heard the EP on my fave Internet Station and its like Queensryche becoming a "Grunge" Band (Post-"Promised Land), and I hope they dont end up like QR . . . Losing the brightness, musicality and power they once had. I was VERY dissapointed with what I've heard on (PoS) the EP. I hope the Album will be "different", but the power of PoS. |

Emo? Nah... the whole album sounds like a cross between 70's blues rock and modern pop/rock. I'm pretty dissapointed by it... I loved all of their other albums, but this one just doesn't cut it for me. |

Anyone like Rinoa?
Often labelled Post-Hardcore but their new album is long, technical, expansive and atmospheric. |

Love the new PoS album myself, not their best but miles better than Scarsick. It shows a huge change in direction but keeps a lot of the old PoS traits as well.

I love Scarsick (I used to hate it, but I think it's a masterpiece now), and I've grown to love Road Salt One as well. RS1 is the weakest POS album to date in my opinion, but it's still a solid 4 star album from me. I can't wait until M@X implements non-metal reviews so I can post my review here at MMA. |

Threshold is my favourite progressive metal band; such a shame Andrew McDermott gave up on them; albums like Hypothetical, Critical Mass, Subsurface are almost flawless, to me at least. other bands i often listen to - DT (especially the albums with Kevin Moore), Shadow Gallery, Circus Maximus, Riverside, Queensryche, Fates Warning, OSI, Redemption, Ark, Enchant, Psyco Drama, Thought Chamber, Sieges Even, Subsignal (from the ashes of Sieges Even), Psychotic Waltz/DeadSoul Tribe, Conception, Mindflow, Evergrey, Vanden plas, Dark Suns, Darkwater.and i'm sure there are more...
