I was listening to this in the car today (the full album version anyway):

and I got to thinking... This is better than the shit Sepultura was churning out in the 90s with the Cavaleras in the band. In fact, every album post-Max, except Against, is at least better than Chaos A.D. (And all are better than Roots, because it is a dogturd sprinkled with glitter). I also got to thinking, I like Schizophrenia better than Arise. And then I got to thinking (I should really stop making a habit of it...) there are a lot of other things I think about metal which a lot of people don't always agree with:
  • I like LuLu
  • I hate Rust in Peace
  • The John Bush era Anthrax is as good as the Belladonna era
  • Undisputed Attitude is a fucking good Slayer album, and God Hates Us All isn't
  • Testament really weren't very good back in the 80s
  • Mayhem is good, but way overrated
  • Cannibal Corpse are a much more accomplished band than a lot of people give them credit for
  • Death's gory old stuff is better than the jazz/prog stuff later on
  • For a long time I said Dark Angel's Darkness Descends was at least as good as Reign In Blood. I was wrong
  • As much as I want to like it, I just don't like Nuclear Assault post-The Plague
  • The Number of the Beast is good, but way overrated, and The X Factor and Virtual XI are both perfectly fine albums. Iron Maiden have never released a bad one
  • Judas Priest has released a lot of awful music, studded with some absolute gems
  • I feel conflicted listening to Anal Cunt. I can't figure out if the sexism, racism, anti-Semitism and homophobia was a joke or not
  • Suffocation are bloody awful
  • Black metal in general is just really silly
  • I would rather listen to Poison's Open Up and Say....Ahh! than any Kiss album ever
  • Dream Theater and Opeth are really, really boring
  • I don't get Led Zeppelin
  • A lot of grindcore is just formless noise, but I still find myself attracted to it
  • Paul Baloff was a really shit singer, but his style fitted Exodus really well back in the day

That will do for now. Anyone else have opinions which seem to run counter to the prevailing wind?

I didn't think that was an unpopular opinion, I always thought God Hates Us All was generally seen as Slayer's worst album (Which it is). Tongue

As for me, I have a ton. Here's a bunch that I can think of at the top of my head:

- I don't think St. Anger is that bad of an album, I really like Load, and I think Hardwired is Metallica's best album since Master of Puppets.
- Meshuggah is groove metal, not progressive metal
- Power Metal is one of Pantera's best albums
- I love Death's cover of Painkiller
- Every Helstar album is a masterpiece
- Born Again is one of the best Black Sabbath albums
- Rocka Rolla and Sin After Sin are Judas Priest's best 70's albums
- Point of Entry is one of Judas Priest's best albums
- Facelift is the best Alice in Chains album
- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath isn't that good of an album
- Dance of Death is Iron Maiden's best post-Somewhere in Time album
- Most of Kreator's modern stuff is boring
- Pleasures of the Flesh is one of Exodus's best albums
- Terror Squad is the best Artillery album
- S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is the best Incubus album
- Doomsday Machine is the best Arch Enemy album
- Introduce Yourself is the best Faith No More album
- Caress of Steel is one of Rush's best albums
- Swing and metal is one of the greatest combinations
- Thrash was still great during the 90's
- Untitled is Korn's best album
- Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat is the only good Slipknot album
- At the Gates of Sethu is one of Nile's best albums
- Dave Mustaine is one of the best thrash vocalists
- Songs of Love and Hate is Godflesh's best album
- Strange Highways and Lock Up the Wolves are two of Dio's best albums
- Virtual XI is a great album, and The X Factor is terrible
- Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is the weakest of Iron Maiden's 80's albums
- Set the World on Fire is the best Annihilator album, and Knight Jumps Queen is one of the greatest bass songs

Too many? Wacko

I remember having a similar topic to this on the Heavy Metal Haven forum years ago. I expect a lot of my opinions have changed since those days but there's a few that still hold true and a few newer opinions:

  • St. Anger isn't the absolutely terrible album it's often made out to be. Don't get me wrong, it's bad, it's just not that bad. I'd take it over Load and ReLoad.
  • Though I have a bit more appreciation for them than I once did, I still don't think Slayer are all that great.
  • The same applies in different ways to every Big 4 thrash band though, including Metallica for having an overall really patchy later career.
  • Black metal is better than death metal.
  • Most so called brutal death metal is boring.
  • Most so called melodic death metal is boring.
  • Most so called old school death metal is boring.
  • Yes, that last one includes genuine older bands and the newer ones who try too hard.
  • Derrick Green era Sepultura is stronger than the Max Cavalera era.
  • Black metal is more inventive than any other metal genre, including and perhaps especially progressive metal.
  • No Prayer for the Dying is a solid Iron Maiden album and certainly not the weakest of the Bruce Dickinson fronted albums.
  • That would be Fear of the Dark.
  • Ride the Lightning is better than Master of Puppets.
  • Christopher Lee's Charlemagne: The Omens of Death is a pretty decent album.
  • Leprosy is Death's best album.
  • Eluveitie's best album to date is Evocation I, which isn't even metal.
  • Myrkur is unfairly hated.
  • Dark Medieval Times is the best and most interesting Satyricon album.
I may come up with more later.

While this track:

Andi Deris-fronted Helloween is better than Michael Kisk-fronted. Both Keeper of the Seven Keys albums are overrated as hell.

I'll conditionally agree with the Deris > Kiske bit, even tho I love Keeper Part I

However, I thought Keeper Part II was a pretty poor follow up and I have never understood why "II" always gets more love than "I."

Kiske had already worn out his welcome with me by the time "II" rolled around. (I won't even discuss how I feel about Pink Bubbles or Chameleon.  Yuck! :D )

Pretty basic, but I think Atheist's Piece of Time is a way better album than Unquestionable Presence.

^ Whereas I'd say Piece of Time is as good as Unquestionable Presence (and vice versa).

Also, I hate Iron Maiden. That is all except for Somewhere in Time. Love that album to death. I always thought they were so stagnant and uncreative with each album.

I also dislike Avatarium, as some of you might have seen from my reviews. Although I planned on reviewing their new album, ever since the shitstorm that was caused from the GWTRM one I've really lost the passion to do so.

HammerFall's debut is NOT their best album! That would be Crimson Thunder.Wink Then again, I've yet to listen to their last 3 or 4 albums in depth so who knows!

^ personally i don't understand why anyone gives a flying fuck about what music someone else likes. I read reviews to get insight into an album's contents and possible new perspectives that i have missed.

Vim, i totally agree with you about early Testament though. Yawn

Powerslave is way overrated, my least favorite Iron Maiden 80's album.
Brave New World marks the beginning of the end of the band for me.

My corresponding reviews are on the site.

One I forgot and just reminded myself of:

Nightfall in Middle-Earth is the weakest Blind Guardian album.
