I have recently listened to the audiobook. It's one of those occasions where the movie is true to the book, and both are excellent.

Final part of the movie (or series depending on your point of view). Back up to top tier here. The ending is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. Movies don't normally get me chocked up, but damn. These really make you feel for the protagonist's plight.

Long overdue second watch and reevaluation. Now that the book is all but forgotten in my mind I enjoyed this a hell of a lot more.

I'm currently working a policy of one new movie to one re-watch.
Netflix movie based on true crime that still hasn't been solved. Such a quirky movie. It's style takes some getting used to for a few scenes even on a second viewing, but this definitely feels like a movie I'll watch many times over. Another excellent Korean movie. Some bloody scenes but its not in the same disturbing vein as most I've watched from there, but it's still excellent. Second watch. This one has so many iconic shots it ought to be illegal.

I thought about other twisted and unpleasant movies after our Little conversation Adam, and I can´t remember if I ever recommended Martyrs? Now that is one harsh, disturbing, and unpleasant movie to Watch. Lots of varying opinions on that one. Some say it´s a simple toture-porn Flick, while others say there is a deeper philosophical meaning. I just find if incredibly brutal, nauseating, and very, very bleak...

I've heard of it Jonas, but not seen that one. I see it's part of the so called 'New French Extremity' movement, which according to RYM the movie Raw (AKA Grave) is also part of which I have seen and was definitely messed up in a major way.

As far as disturbing films go I always recall how much Hostel disturbed the shit out of me years ago, but the Saw movies never did. I think the difference was that Saw had this deeper reasoning for all the traps and games being played and Hostel was just sadistic for sadistic's sake.
Antichrist was another disturbing one I did see. Watched it once and promptly sold it on.

I remember seeing Martyrs a long time ago, and thinking it did have a strong meaning to it. I have it rated 4.5 on RYM, so I was obviously impressed, though I only vaguely remember it, at this point. Then again, I was kinda messed up, at that point, and also enjoyed Hostel,

Audition (1999), that's another one that's pretty messed up. Especially with the way it starts off and just turns that way later on.

I don´t think I have the stomach for Audition and Grave sounds pretty unpleasant too (I don´t really have the stomach for Martyrs either). I´ve watched Hostel and I didn´t like it (it´s itched into my brain though). As you said I thought it was torture for the sake of it, and it made me sick to watch. Saw is twisted and brutal, but in the end still a "regular" horror movie.
I´ve yet to watch Antichrist, but Triers movies are usually pretty twisted (as is he). I actually dined at the same restaurant as him and his crew maybe 15-20 years ago, and he was swallowing more pills than eating food. He actually used to live not more than a mile from my home. I don´t think he lives there anymore though.

Trier's The House That Jack Built is supposed to be quite good, been meaning to check that one out since I believe it's on Prime, but if I don't get on with that I think Trier will be added to my list of director's that I'm done with (which I think only has one other name on it). I tried watching Dogville a while back, which is supposed to be his best film and is ranked at #264 all time on RYM and I thought the style of it was so gimmicky and distracting that it's one of the few films I switched off without finishing, which I normally feel compelled to do no matter how poor it is to obsessive compulsive levels.
I've a wide taste in film and in a way I think it can all be considered a form of escapism and I can go from watching charming, family friendly animated movies like those of Ghibli and Pixar to gory horror movies with the flip of a switch. I mainly only draw the lines at musicals. As far as films with sadistic elements go, I seem to be okay with it when it's in a horror movie. There was this one movie I watched not that long ago, The Killer Inside Me, which had high levels of sadistic violence (against women) in it outside of a horror context, which was portrayed extremely graphically and that disturbed me a lot more than any horror movie ever has.

On one hand, it's a decent enough movie that remains fast moving throughout it's 2 hour plus length. On the other, it's also possibly the most over hyped movie I've seen for a long time, which also makes it rather underwhelming. I was really expecting so much more from a movie that currently retains an average of 3.95 on RYM, whose community typically hates everything. For me, this doesn't even come close to being worthy of being in the site's top 1000, let alone #130 best movie of all time. I probably set my expectations too high considered that the site also hyped up the directors' previous movie Good Time and I didn't think that was all that either. This is an improvement, but I wouldn't call it a great movie, only an okay one. Sandler's Howard Ratner also might just be the most unlikable protagonist I've ever seen in a movie. I found myself completely unsympathetic to the character (in fact no one in the whole movie comes off well - including the people playing themselves) and that's what really dragged this movie down for me, since the whole thing is basically him just having more and more bad luck (aided by his own bad decisions) and yet I can feel no sympathy for the character or care whether he makes his deal of a lifetime or if he crashes and burns. Unless of course that's the intent of the character, but that makes no sense to me because it's not really a comedy and the alternative is that we're supposed to be laughing at his misfortune and for me the idea of that just makes the movie seem pathetic. I did like it more than I didn't, but I definitely have very mixed feelings. It's like how I feel about the game Far Cry 3: a great game with an arsehole for a hero.

I've a massive watch list and a pretty long re-watch list too. I definitely put more movies on my Prime and Netflix lists than I take off. I'm currently working a ratio of one previously unseen movie to one re-watch. I'm trying to scale back my movie collection and not horde movies I don't think I'll watch again, but also making sure I've watched every title in my collection at least twice to make sure I don't have any later regrets, as has been the case before with movies I haven't kept.
That said, there was never any doubt this one was a keeper. I'm not so sure on some others even on my main shelf (I have a main shelf, plus a load in my desk and another load in the spare room which still total over 900 movies and that's not counting TV boxsets which probably put my collection closer to 1000 even after purging a whole bunch already this week).

Not sure why I still feel shocked by what's in a Ghibli animated movie, but damn this one really has a thing about testicles.

This one is heavily based on Japanese folklore, and the whole testicles thing is part of that. Studio Ghibli have quite a few things that raise the eyebrows in western audiences, but I think this is one of the real WTF things in their catalogue. Unless you happen to know the folklore behind the movie before seeing it.
