I don't consider Opeth death metal, really, although there are some similarities

Out of this list I've heard 8, and Death is BY FAR my favourite of them.  Chuck Schuldiner was akin to a god

Went for Death. Can't go wrong with the master Chuck.

EDIT: one you could have included to make the poll more eclectic is The Chasm, which doesn't really fall into any set death subgenre. And they kick ass to boot.

I only wanted to include the most "popular" death metal bands here. There are a lot of other bands I would've included, but I tried to just limit it to the classics.

I went with Death, but I love Atheist, Cynic, Bolt Thrower, Opeth, Carcass, At The Gates, and Suffocations. I was surprised by Obituary's absence from the list.

they were one of the first death metal bands i ever heard and, as such, have quite a nostalgic feel for me.
