Wong Kar-wai is a highly acclaimed director, but I cannot see how this can be among his best works. A watchable movie that never bores precisely, but it's kinda just 'there'. I also can't decide if its supposed to have such a surreal dreamlike quality or the colour grading is just weird (read: bad). Very solid. Not seeing why people don't like this one.

Quite a powerful statement against anti-Semitism in post-World War Two USA. Features a very young Dean Stockwell.

I have wildly mixed feelings on this one. Being a niche movie to begin with (it's over five and a half hours long), it's the kind of film that you need to be in the right mood and frame of mind for before even attempting it, and I'm not convinced I was in it today. But I only had until May 4th to check this out, so there's that. That said, this isn't my first foray into what's known as slow cinema and I have seen a film in the style that's got about another two hours on this one and I was captivated by that. With this film I just wasn't feeling it. I never reached a point that I could say I disliked the film, but I was left many times just wishing it would get a move on. By the time I eventually got to the final hour (done in shifts across the entire day) I found I couldn't care less about it and was just sticking with it out of stubbornness of having gone that far with it already. Even for slow cinema, I felt many times I could leave the film running, leave the room to make a cup of tea and I still wouldn't have actually missed anything. Other slow cinema films like Stalker opened up on the subsequent viewings, but I don't see myself inclined to ever try this one again, should I find I have access to it again in the future.

I think I have to count Ryusuke Hamaguchi among my top directors now. My fourth film from him and his work is so damn captivating, especially with dialogue (even though I'm reading subs).

^ By chance have you picked up Arrow's Years of Lead boxset? I was looking at that one but I haven't taken the plunge yet.

Columbia Noir #4 Disc 1: Walk a Crooked Mile
Solid enough, not spectacular. Has a bit of a docudrama feel. And the Stooges: Well paired with a similar corporate espionage theme. Shemp gets to shine (and get soaked multiple times over). Very solid film. Dafoe is a great actor that doesn't always get enough recognition. This was solid enough, with problems, including a movie tone that is completely misjudged and unfitting with the original two films. The threat is also a complete rehash of the original film. There is plenty of good stuff as well though and the late Harold Ramis' presence is really felt in the film. On the surface this film is so out of character for Scorsese but as you get into it you realise it's not really the kids film it appears but a love letter to the origins of cinema. And it's visually stunning too.

So far yes. Savage 3 is a bit like an exploitation version of Falling Down

Third or fourth time on this one for me. One film I love more every time I view it. This is either slightly easier to digest than other Tarkovsky films or I'm just used to his style now. Not my favourite, a bit too much religious for me, but never boring. This was his final film, and made primarily by the Swedish film industry with a lot of alumni from Ingmar Bergman's films.

The debut film of Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Not as polished as his more yet work as you'd expect, but the potential is on show already and it's clearly a deeply personal film for him, being based on his sisters memoir and featuring other members of his family in the cast.

It's been far too long since I last revisited this. A masterpiece from beginning to end.

An all time favourite of mine. Just upgraded my DVD to Blu-Ray and it looks stunning. Bond goes out with a bang. The film is not without its issues and I think Casino Royale remains the best Craig Bond, but this did cement him in for me as a serious contender as the best Bond.

Now that I have Disney+, I'm going to attempt something I've been thinking of doing for a while, which is to go through all the MCU movies (I may watch different series at a late date, but for now I'll just stick to the movies, outside of Wandavision, which I've heard is a must watch before the new Doctor Strange movie, if I get that far.) I've seen about 7 of the movies before, so well over 2/3 of this will be entirely new to me, which will be interesting. I started with this one, which I had seen before (along with its two sequels): The movie itself holds up about as well as expected. RDJ is obviously phenomenal as the title character, and the pacing is pretty much perfect. I forgot how annoying Jeff Bridges is as the villain, though, which is the one thing that holds it back a bit for me. I remember liking it much more than IM2, and about as much as IM3 when I saw them all before, so we'll see how those go on a rewatch.

HULK.....SMASH! Yeah, that was easily the best part of an otherwise fairly unremarkable movie. I've seen people describe as possibly the least essential MCU movie, and I can understand why. It's not bad, Edward Norton and Tim Roth are both excellent, but it just feels like a dumb, generic cartoon story turned into a live action movie, instead of being more fleshed out and emotional engaging the way the best MCU movies can be (Iron Man 3, for example, has some very strong emotional scenes, from what I remember, while still satisfying with its action, of course.)
