Zero budget speculative fiction. Rough around the edges, but it's got a pretty decent underground alternative soundtrack. And there's a somewhat prophetic explosion near the end.

Today was all re-watches and I got a few in:

This might just have one of the best designed ghosts of any film.

Somehow knowing the twist doesn't harm this in any way.

Both 4K restored versions.

This went slightly better than before, now that I actually knew all the characters beforehand, which kinda helps just a bit LOL

My initial opinion mostly stands, though, that from a pure action and spectacle standpoint, it's by far the best Phase 1 movie, but there's enough silliness and moments where the characters are forced to act dumb just for the sake of dragging things out, that I can't consider it a personal favorite. It's definitely entertaining all the way through, though, but parts of it just made me shake my head like crazy. It's probably slightly behind the first Iron-Man, for my favorite on this run so far.

I already know what Civil War is about, and just based on the concept, I fully expect to absolutely loathe that movie, lol

Not near as good at the first two. It's about three quarters of the way there, but the plot with the Pope is fucking stupid, and there are other bits and pieces which just don't ring true..

If Sharknado wasn't shit enough for you, there's this! People getting attacked by great white sharks in a cornfield because of a shark cult led by a serial killer who's waiting for a shark god to remanifest, and draws it's energy from Stonehenge. Zero budget, awful but hilarious special effects, acting which is worse than the non-sexy parts in 80s porn...

Well, I was actually wrong about one thing, that being that I actually liked Guy Pierce just fine in this one, so it does in fact buck the trend of Iron Man movies with annoying actors playing the villain. My initial opinion of this being my favorite MCU movie pre-Winter Soldier still stands, though. It's hard to even explain why, since it's still as silly as ever, but somehow on a more personal level a lot of the time, and I find it's the MCU movie that keeps me the most consistently entertained from start to finish, without any scenes I don't enjoy (but yeah, I remember Winter Solder topping it, so we'll see how that goes on Tuesday.)

Something of a companion of Ceylan's first film Kasaba in that it fictionalises the making of it.

Ceylan's third film. A psych drama dealing with loneliness. It ought to be depressing, but somehow its not. Some amazing visually stunning shots here. That's true of all his work, but this feels like the point his game was stepped up.

Other than these two, I've been mainly re-watches the last few days:

Pretty sure I've written about this one before on here and don't have much to add about it. As always, though, darker and more messed up than you'd expect from the poster.

This one is such a gem and I always feel like hardly anyone watched it.

I just got the Alien collection on blu-ray, so I'm watching the whole series in chronological order. I've seen this one a couple of times before, but the sequel will only be the second viewing.

Somehow only the second time watching this.

Potentially my favourite slasher on account of it pisstaking other slashers.

Not as fun or charming as the first movie, and it lacks the fish out of water feeling that made that one hilarious at times, but it still has some great action as usual, and there's some really good scenes in the second half. Definitely more of a middling MCU movie, though.

Yep, still easily the best of the MCU movies I've seen. I remember watching it at the same time as Agents of Shield back in the day, which made it extra effective, but now even with my memories of that series behind me (I gave it up around the end of Season 3, if I remember right) this was still as great as ever, especially after having seen the first Captain America movie, so it makes a lot more sense now, lol As far as action goes, this is honestly going to be hard to top, as there's more of it here than any other MCU movie I've seen (even the first Avengers) and there's plenty of tension throughout, so it all feels urgent and intense.

^ That's easily one of my favourite MCU movies. And probably is the best serious one. Thor: Ragnarok probably takes the cake for the comedic MCU. And Spider-Man: No Way Home for the sheer geek out factor.

I got this in a blu ray bundle on ebay that said Guillermo Del Toro films. This film has nothing to do with him (which I obviously knew), I mainly wanted to update my copies of The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth to blu ray. I'd never heard of this film. It was okay, but it's also not hard to see why it didn't make big when Pan's Labyrinth started interest in Spanish language film over here. It just doesn't develop anywhere near satisfactory enough.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan's fourth film. It is perhaps a step down from Uzak, but generally solid and compelling personal drama that he excels at. He actually stars in this one himself, alongside his real life wife (who went on to co-write his next four movies).

Aside from Fassbender's performance, this isn't an especially great Alien movie. Only the second time I've seen this one: didn't recall that much beyond the main plot points, and it remains to be seen where this will rank overall when Alien 3 and Resurrection aren't exactly well liked (only seen twice and once respectively, longer ago than this), but for now this is on track as the worse Alien movie outside of the Predator crossovers.

Yeah, as much as I liked the first Thor and some of the characters from those movies in general, the trailer for Ragnarok made me very nervous with how comedic it seems to be, so I'm not holding out much hope for it, since most modern comedy in general tends to be a big miss for me. I've had the ending (and a couple other things tied to it) spoiled for No Way Home, and it sounds like a case where as long as I like Tom Holland's version of the character well enough, that has potential to be one of my absolute favorites, based on what it apparently does. But yeah, obviously a lot of that depends on how Homecoming and Far From Home go.

Later this week I have Ant-Man and Civil War, my two most dreaded MCU movies of all (well also the second Ant-Man, but I may end up skipping that one) back to back, but then afterwards there's nothing I'm overly concerned about until Ragnarok and maybe Eternals.

This one is just pure fun from start to finish. I kinda get the different versions of Guardians I've experienced mixed up a bit at this point (this, the Telltale series and the Eidos Montrreal game from last year), but they're all excellent, and obviously going back to this, which was the first version I saw, is always fun.

Eternals is okay. Not as bad as some have said it is. The runtime is very bloated though. There's no way that movie needed to be over 2.5 hours long.

^Yeah, I don't have any particular reasons to think I'll hate it, but I know pretty much everyone else says it's the worst/among the worst MCU movie, so I'm setting my expectations low. As far as running time, though, I'm most concerned for Endgame. I know most people consider it at least good or even great, but man, a 3 hour Marvel movie? That sounds like total overkill!

This one was solid, if somewhat of a mixed bag, as I was expecting. The action sequences were great as always, and I loved a lot of the comedy (especially Ultron's cheesy quips and the whole saga of Captain America being teased because he told Iron Man to watch his language, then he swears near the end and Fury asks him "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" LOL), but the story was definitely inconsistent.

I think my biggest issue is I like pretty much all the characters on their own (even Ultron was a very fun villain, imo), and some of them do work well together, but in the first Avengers movie there were times where I felt they just didn't work great as a team, and this movie only makes that more obvious. I get some of that is intentional and likely meant as a setup for Civil War (which as a 2 and half hour movie of in-fighting sounds like a recipe for a 0.5 star movie if I ever saw one, LOL), but man, some of the pure stupidity in this movie is just ridiculous, and has me concerned Infinity War and Endgame wont be overly enjoyable for me. I guess we'll see when I get to those. But yeah, this was fun overall, just kinda frustrating at times.

And now I've reached my most dreaded stretch, watching Ant-Man tonight, then Civil War tomorrow. My concern for Ant-Man is it looks incredibly silly and stupid based on the trailer, and I just have a feeling I'll end up hating it and switching it off early. Civil War.... Well, I've already expressed my concerns for that one. I fully expect to wanna switch it off, but I'll try and sit through it since I'm guessing it will be important in the long run. At the very least, after those two I get Doctor Strange, which I've been looking forward to for a while, then Guardians 2 and the first of the new Spider-Man movies, both of which I also have high expectations for.

Civil War is one of my favourites actually.

It's also a very important movie in terms of the MCU's overall plot, setting up five further movies (Black Panther, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Infinity War, Ant-man and the Wasp and Black Widow in Phase 4 - which by the way you could easily divert ahead to so long as you save the post credits scene for after Endgame).

Sure, there's in fighting. If you don't like in fighting you're going to struggle with the movie. But it isn't all in fighting. It's still a Captain America movie first and foremost, which means continuing the story started in The First Avenger with HYDRA and Bucky Barnes.

There is also a pretty strong reason for the in fighting that I won't spoil.

I think I'll save Black Widow for when I get to it naturally, both because I wanna do things in release order, and because I really like the character and I've had something spoiled about her, so I think I wanna see her solo movie after what I've heard about happens. And yeah, I need to hope the non in-fighting parts of Civil War are enough to make it at least watchable for me. Either way, I doubt it or Ragnarok will possibly be worse than......

Well, the good news is I did actually manage to survive it, and was maybe slightly less awful than I expected. It still sucked horribly, though I won't sugarcoat it: That was one of the worst movies I've sat through in ages.

I liked Hope and her father (enough so that I'm slightly interested in seeing her role in the sequel), and I actually found the hero's powers somewhat interesting, but man, everything else sucked. The action was very dizzying at times, with the constant changes in size paired with how fast it went at times, and holy crap was the dialogue bad. I like most MCU humor I've seen so far, but man Luis was one of the most annoying characters I've ever experienced in anything, and pretty much any attempt the movie made at being "funny", instead just made me sick. It also doesn't help that I found every character aside from Hope and Dr. Pym to be terrible (Scott included), and the villain was especially terrible. I guess I can at least say the bar is so low after this one, the only thing that may not clear it is its sequel (and I guess the third Ant-Movie as well, which I'm definitely "excited" for Dead)

Well, the good news is I actually did end up liking it much more than I expected. The stuff that followed up from Winter Soldier was great, and I do understand the point of the main conflict overall, but.....

Let's just say, if anything I ended up re-thinking things slightly after this one. I already knew the overall concept of the movie before I started watching the MCU movies and at that point I figured if I ever watched this I would lean heavily towards one side. Well, after Age of Ultron I had already been leaning more towards the opposite side than I initially anticipated, and pretty early on in this movie sealed the deal for me completely, to the point where I'm now starting to actively despise a certain character I once loved. To be fair, I legit think he was out of character in this one, at least to some degree, and that threw me off a bit.

Aside from that, though, the action was fantastic as always, there was a lot of great comedy, and I was satisfied with the story by the end, even if I still wasn't too impressed by a certain person.... (name starts with T, ends with k) and it does make me more hopeful for some of the later movies than I was expecting (I wasn't really sure either way about Black Panther going in, but I liked him a lot here, and the new Spider-Man had an excellent first showing) and it also makes me ever more intrigued for a certain Disney+ series. So yeah, definitely not my favorite MCU movie, but I'd say it's probably in the upper half, definitely better than Age of Ultron as far as these big "event" movies go.
