I'm going to try and choose my favourite albums from different genres rather than my most listened ones.  This is going to be tough!  No particular order

Rhetorica - Gnduri
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Skyclad - No Daylights Nor Heeltaps
Lake of Tears - Forever Autumn
Opeth - Watershed

Can't resist continuing this to 10

Pain of Salvation - Be
Negură Bunget - Vrstele Pămntului
Noekk - The Water Sprite
Ayreon - 01011001
Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second

It's hard as hell right?

I also tried to diversify mine from a variety of genre's.

Also PTS isn't really a metal album Wink
Skyclad eh? That is interesting. Only have one album by them, perhaps I should look into more.
Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal!

I can't possibly pick a top 5 albums.  maybe I could do "top 5 of x subgenre or top 5 of (insert year here), or even top 5 by this artist with a massive discog, but not overall

I can't pick just five and it's very difficult to rank so I won't bother, I'll just try to stick to 10 at most. ;)

Blind Guardian - Imaginations From the Other Side
Anubis Gate - The Detached
Wuthering Heights - Far From the Madding Crowd
Rebellion - Miklagard - The History of the Vikings Vol. II
Аркона - Гой, Роде, Гой!
Cruachan - Folk-Lore
Sonic Pulsar - Playing the Universe
Beyond Twilight - For the Love of Art and the Making
Epica - Design Your Universe

This is a hard one, as it differs from the mood. I will take one from somewhat each genre.
Ahab - Call of the Wretched sea
Finntroll - Midnattens Widunder/Nifelvind
Sigh - Imaginary Soniscape
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Moonspell - Wolfheart

Because I wanted to make something that was impossibly difficult LOL
This took a lot of pondering for me, and really I could struggle to make a top 50 probably!

After reading the whole thread (not that it's that long), i decided to throw some freshness into it.

1. Beyond Twilight - For The Love of Art and The Making
2. Guthrie Govan - Erotic Cakes
3. Opeth - Blackwater Park
4. Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment 2
5. Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter

Couple of runner ups that deserve to be in there (probably AES, or DT), but you can't beat math.

^ That's pretty much so. Progressive metal is the only sub-genre that [i feel] is artsy and varied and innovative enough to grip my attention.

And thanks for injecting some freshness! I honestly can't pick 5 top albums..so I tried to vary mine with genre.

Agreed about prog metal, I LOVE thrash but most extreme metal I have lost taste for now. Especially brutal tech ones. Prog metal is probably my favorite overall genre. Post metal is also amazing Heart and the current wave that is keeping metal fresh!

Can't argue with Sad Wings...that album is brilliant.
