As we all know, Metallica has had a ballad type song as the 4th one on all their albums except Kill em All and St Anger.
OK, maybe some of these aren't exactly ballads but they do tend to be lighter than the rest of the album. You know what I mean. So which is your favorite? Mine is Fade to Black. Closely followed by The Unforgiven, and The Day That Never Comes. |

Now where are Mama Said and Low Man's Lyric? Unforgiven III could perhaps also be counted into this group.
But my favourite is probably One or one of the Unforgivens. I'll go with the first of the trilogy now.

It's definitely between Sanitarium and One, but they're both so good I really can't decide.

They are really close in my mind as well, but I'll give One my vote.

I thought about III but I wanted to keep it with the "4th song" Silly I know I also really love Sanitarium and One. Awesome songs as well. Fade to Black is my fav but after that...I can't really rank em at all. Just a clusterfuck of awesome. Edited by The Angry Scotsman - 10 Apr 2011 at 6:44pm |

Sanitarium has always been one of my favorite Metallica tracks. The buildup is epic.

Gotta be Fade To Black. I would maybe have chosen a different track from their discography but out of those Fade To Black wins hands down. How come so few options?

The poll lists those songs which fall as the 4th track on their respective albums.

Hm, I was going to say "Hero Of the Day" but it wasn't there...that one doesn't count as a ballad? Having difficulties seeing how some of the other ones on the list do.
I went with Unforgiven, given the question. I like Fade To Black more, but think Unforgiven fits the "ballad" bill better. |
