Prog or not ?

Here my question is simple.

Nope but it used to be. I had a period in the mid-nineties where I almost exclusively listened to progressive metal like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Sieges Even, Psychotic Waltz, Watchtower, Queensr�che...etc. Then I had a period of not listening to metal at all where I listened to acts like Air, Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Portishead and well...just a bunch of different non metal stuff. I returned to metal in the early 00s where I had a crush on power metal like Rhapsody of Fire, stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, then a period with a fascination for acts like In Flames, Soilwork and other acts of their ilk and then I discovered Opeth and things changed again. Both my interest in progressive rock/metal and death metal were ignited again (I had a period in the late eighties/early nineties where I listened almost exclusively to thrash and death metal). My interest in progressive rock/metal has become smaller and smaller in recent years though and I�d say I�m in a period now (and have been for a couple of years) where old school extreme metal is what I listen to the most (be it black, death, thrash, doom or grind).

I can't answer this one. I don't worry about which genre an artist belongs to (I'm too old for that shit), so, if I like an artist, I like that artist regardless of the genre, and if I dislike an artist, then I dislike the artist regardless of the genre. That being said, most of the music I like happens to fall under the rubrics of heavy metal, progressive rock and hard rock and, within metal, a lot of the artists that I like can definitely be classified as progressive metal artists. So, it's not my favorite metal genre - I don't have a favorite metal genre - but it is a genre that I enjoy very much. I can enjoy listening to a massive Dream Theater epic just as much as a two-and-a-half minute AC/DC rocker or a Bastard Priest death metal/hardcore punk combo track.

And Colt has a point about people's tastes changing over time. Personally, I've found that, as I grew older, I became less intense and more open towards lots of different types of music (interestingly, only very few of the artists and releases that I've taken a liking to over the years, have fallen out of favor with me).

No. It's thrash metal for me.

as a member of the sludgy slime fest club i have to say no, but i like the sludge metal to be on the progy side of things, but also on the dirty/gritty side of things, sludge with dose of grunge and post-punk influences is neat to,

music with dark post punk influence is equaly interesting (if that exists)

nope, i like when metal gets proggy, but i dont like the prog metal bands very much at all, most of em are yust prog for progs sake.

Nope.avi. I like it but most of it gets WAAAAAAY too cheesed up with keyboards and vocals.

In terms of metal I think I like Thrash the most, then Stoner, then Metalcore, then maybe Nu or Classic Metal (Priest, Maiden, Ozzy, Dio era Sabbath).

I only like a bit of Death (only about 20 albums) and barely any Black at all.
No Grindcore bar Napalm Death.

I don't know any Prog Metal (DT, PW, FW, Queensryche) of the enclosed sub genre at all, but like metal bands who are a bit/lot Prog (Tool, Mastodon, Mars Volta) but dont fit in that original genre.

But Prog Rock from the 68-85 period I love, thats a huge percentage of my music collection, along with classic rock.
