So, allow me to begin by asking if any of you know what 'Kronik' by Voivod is like?
I know it has a lot of live recordings and remixes on it but I haven't actually heard it.

don't know, isn't it a compilation ?

For any Voivod question, please feel free to PM UMUR he seems to be a specialist. Anyway I remember discovering them with dimension hatross, it sounded so different to eny other metal bands I was exposed to (it was 18 years ago, I was 12 y.o.).

Regarding thrash metal, some of my favourite albums of the genre :
- Metallica : 'master of puppets'
- Slayer : 'hell awaits'
- Death Angel : 'the ultra-violence'
- Testament : 'the legacy' (mandatory) also I love the most "commercial" 'souls of black'
- Never : they have two albums, don't remember the titles (polish tech thrash band)
- Dark Angel : 'darkness descends' (progsters will prefer 'time does not heal' but I like darkness for its power)
- Overkill : 'Horroscope'
- Suicidal Tendencies : 'Lights...Camera...Revolution !' and the more "commercial" 'the art of rebellion'
- Sepultura : 'arise' (I discovered them with 'schizophrenia' but prefer 'arise')
- Kreator : 'coma of souls' (mandatory)
- Coroner : 'mental vortex' and 'grin' (both mandatory)
- Annihilator : 'Alice in hell" (mandatory)
- Megadeth : 'rust in peace'
- Mekong Delta : 'dances of death'
- Turbo : 'Epidemie' (polish band, tech thrash on this album [they went thorugh many metal styles during their career : heavy, thrash and even death], features Grzegorz Kupczyk on vocals, the polish Bruce Dickinson), also their last effort 'Tozsamosc' (moe heavy than thrash) is excellent (avoid the english versions of their albums, Grzegorz has a very strong accent))

There are also german bands Sodom, Tankard and Destruction but I enjoy less their music.

It contains some techno/electro remixes which are pretty cool if one is into both metal and (non-pop) techno [I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with the techno subgenres]... well, I guess they're kind of industrial. I think they're pretty interesting. Then there are some 'previously unreleased' tracks which have not been tampered with by DJs. These are pretty good, too. And then there are some live tracks. It's probably nto the first Voivod album the uninitiated should buy, but it is quite interesting.

Hey guys, I like a good singer in thrash. Do any of you know other bands I could pick up on?
Here's the bands I already like, to give you an idea of what I'm into... Approve
Annihilator
Anthrax
Megadeth
Metallica
Pantera (excluding the last 3 albums because of the excessive screaming)
Voivod
Slammer
Slayer
Meliah Rage
Suicidal Tendancies
Death Angel
Toxik
Flotsam And Jetsam
Heathen
Forbidden
I would be very happy if you could suggest some more.Big smile  It would save me trawling through all the screamers, which I find unpleasant. ie. Sodom, Kreator and so on...

Well Nevermore is usually labelled Power metal but they have lots of thrash metal elements and an outstanding vocalist in Warrel Dane. They are highly recommendable if you ask me.

^Im sure youll be blown away by Nevermore then. And if you find that you enjoy Nevermore be sure to check out Sanctuary as well. A couple of the members of Nevermore used to play in that band. Sanctuary released two albums in the eighties/ early nineties that are also on the border between power metal and thrash. Especially Into the Mirror Black is highly recommendable. Sanctuary has just reformed BTW and will according to Warrel Dane release a new album.

And I just remembered another great thrash metal act I wanted to recommend: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/noneuclid.aspx?ac=non. Theyve only released one album but its some pretty powerful stuff.

Hyades
Lazarus A.D
Warbringer
Warpath

Polish band TURBO ('Kawaleria szatana' is their best, both musically and vocally, but it's more heavy metal oriented than thrash metal, I enclose below a song from 'ostatni wojownik' (the last warrior) a 100 % thrash metal album)

Updated 4/20/11.

Nevermore
!!!
One of my all time faves Big smile!
Though I REALLY dont like that they are called "Powermetal" as PM vocals are always melodic (clean) and follow a melody/Classical melody as the Guitar leads-follow in suit.  And the Drums are what me and my friends call "Happy Feet" LOL as the double bass are at constant rumble, not a lot of real time-changes.
Nevermore are really more of a "Tech-Thrash" Metal with Prog Metal elements (imo).  But they are heavier and have more time changes than most Powermetal I've heard (Though Symphony X and Blind Guardian break the mold too, and the founders of PM "Helloween" were more like a faster Iron Maiden Smile), and super SUPER tight, and they pull
it off Live as well.
LOVED Sanctuary too, I have their 1st "Refuge Denied" on LP, "The Mirror Black" and the somewhat rare "Into the Mirror Live/Dark Reflections" on Cd('s).

Heres Nevermore Fucking Shit Up!

Jeff Loomis was the lone Guitarist on their debut but checkout the Solo, its INSANE!  And Van Williams has to be
the most underated Drummer out there! (Nevermore seems to like Forbidden as they have had 2 Guitarists from the
Bay Area neighbors- Tim Calvert, and current 2nd Lead Steve Smyth).

If some of you guys missed Time Sigs Thread:
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=586

Big smile

Recent Update:

This apparently was written when Nevermore's latest "The Obsidian Conspiracy" debuted, as a NEW
Sanctuary
album is being made! Shocked
http://www.metalsucks.net/2010/06/30/less-is-nevermore-the-warrel-dane-interview/#more-38956

"Hey, speaking of the bass player and the music of your life, I am fuckin psyched about this long-overdue Sanctuary reunion!

[laughs] Yeah, wait til you hear some of the new stuff! Ive got a song that Ive been working on the last few days. Its pretty frickin cool.

Youre not joking right now? Youre already working on music?

No, Im not joking at all! It sounds like Into The Mirror Black stuff, which obviously is the evolution of our sound. Were going to really start rehearsing again and just [pauses] deal with it. It feels right for some reason. I know I said years ago that I wouldnt do this. That was probably because most of us werent really friends. We didnt talk to each other.

No shit!

No, the ending of that band was weird. It got kind of ugly at the end. Eventually, we grew up a little and started talking to each other again. Now, were in a place where were good friends again. Which is cool cuz were all different people now.

I had always thought that Len [Rutledge, Sanctuary guitarist] He tried a couple bands after Sanctuary broke up, but then he kind of quit doing music. One day, it occurred to me that hes too talented to not be doing something. I thought, maybe we should work on something together and see what happens. It happened very slowly. Its a good feeling.

Hey, those Sanctuary albums were magic. You guys were on track to eventually contribute an undisputed classic album to the genre. Everybody knows that. But working with Dave Mustaine on the bands first record mustve been weird. How old were you even?

Oh my god. I was a kid. You know what, I have to tell you: I am going to go back and take more voice lessons before I even think about recording another Sanctuary record. I have to! I havent been using that aspect of my voice for years because in Nevermore, I dont think its really appropriate. When youre singing that way, you have to be consistent. And since youre never too old to learn anything, why not go back and take lessons?

You challenged yourself on those records. No doubt about that.

Oh yeah."

Clap

 . . . OH Yeah! Smile

What I like about Nevermore and similar bands being categorized as power metal is that they provide some hard and heavy counterweight to the cheesiness of a lot of other power metal bands.

I'm not too familiar with Voivod. I have their albums up to Nothingface, as well as their newest but I hated it.

Thrash Metal is great!
Megadeth
Metallica (up to AJFA of course)
Slayer
Anthrax
Testament
Exodus
Sepultura
Dark Angel
Voivod

Also, Lamb of God and Mesuggah since they are considered thrash metal here LOL
On that note, Nevermore is one of my favorite bands! I like to think of them as neoclassical power prog thrash!
Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal!

Listen to doom metal, worship Satan
