Excellent documentary which features people from both sides talking about their experiences, along with actual footage. Don't watch the second half if you're feeling sensitive at all.

It's said that George Lucas took the plot from this for Star Wars, but the similarities are very slim.

That wraps up my re-watch of my Kurosawa Samurai boxset. Sanjuro is probably the weakest of the five films in it, but still really good.

There must have been a plot somewhere, but I think it got lost... More stupid so-bad-it's-good stoner humour. It doesn't matter that it doesn't make a lot of sense because most of it is pretty damn funny. Features some first time appearances by Michael Winslow and Peewee Herman, and early roles for Phil Hartman (The Simpsons) and Rita Wilson (Mrs. Tom Hanks).

OK, I don't get independent cinema... Slow moving, but full of symbolism, lots of meat, sleep walking, and a dog. I did think the two main characters were quite convincing though.

Decided to belatedly see what all the hype was about with this one. It's better than I anticipated it to be, but I would still class this as wildly overhyped. I'm glad I did watch it, but for me it's a very solid 4 star film. Nothing more, nothing less, though it is impressively shot.

The Djinn (2021) - An outstanding movie! I don't give a flying f**k about how the users of IMDb reviewed it. 9.5/10

Never seen this before, wish I had. Absolutely brilliant! So over-the-top silly, but played almost completely straight. Good, action-filled diverting fun, as long as you don't overthink it. I suppose everyone else has seen this, but I loved the setting on the microwave here: |

I don't think on my first watch I really appreciated just how weird Akira can be. More influences in here than simply a sci-fi film. Also a (kinda) prophetic movie since it was released in 1988, set in 2019, where Japan is preparing for hosting the 2020 Olympics. A lot of build up, then one epic as all fuck battle which is surely a milestone of Samurai cinema.

This was fucked up. It's also got some excellent cinematography for a relatively unknown horror movie. Story's slow and basic, but works and is genuinely unsettling. A hidden gem in my humble opinion.

Bela Tarr's films are always a bit oddball and shot in long, slow takes, this being no exception.

Good screamy fun with vicious killer rednecks! What I liked about this is that the victims acted properly traumatised right through the movie, and not just for 10 minutes after they just saw their nearest and dearest slaughtered in front of their eyes. And I love Michael Berryman.

Oh man I sort of knew what I was getting myself into with this one, but that didn't make it any less sickening. One for the list of 'non-horror movies scarier than horror movies'. I'm not sure if the reverse narrative makes the story more effective or lessens it. Maybe a bit of both. It's a difficult film to really recommend, and it would say something about anyone who claimed to actually enjoy it (I for one will never watch it again), but it does have something to say beyond the violence. Ironically the most poignant scene is the result of a crew member fucking up and walking into shot while filming was rolling, accidentally creating a powerful statement on people's hesitancy to get involved or help someone in trouble. In that sense, it was as powerful as it was sickening.
