This is hard. I have had difficulty narrowing my list to 15!
If I had to pick 3 though, they would be Thomas Haake (Meshuggah) Chris Adler (Lamb of God) Martin Lopez (Opeth- formerly ) For metal Of all time? Ugh, I could never answer, but Buddy Rich is in there |

Very tough to choose just three, in no particular order:
Dave Lombardo - I love his side projects along with Mike patton. Dave Lombardo + MikePatton= Sonic Mayhem. Pete Sandoval - Brilliant is the word i've got. Flo Mounier - I would go with Mike Portnoy, but since no one had mention Flo, i just decided to take the name of this machine hand. |

Sam Gutterman from maudlin of the Well has the most solid/hard sound I've heard to date, such pure drum slamming when needed and so incredibly respectful and soft when necessary.
Check this out from about 4:30, the last section blows my mind: Martin Lopez and Danney Carey are obligatory, two of my other favourites from the metal field. |

A lot of over-the-top, flash drummers listed...not quite what I would term "solid"...although they are indeed brilliant...
By my definition, some top notch solid drummers would be:
Vinny Appice - His work w/ Sabbath & Dio is like granite
Jerry Gaskill - One of the most understated virtuoso drummers out there...seldom lets on how good he really is, but his creativity in fills and patterns alone, not to mention his live time, is unreal
Jeff Olson - puts down a massive foundation...solid as it gets, IMO... Edited by Pelata - 24 Jan 2011 at 12:09pm |

Inferno - Behemoth (He joined uniquely speed, heavy, technical. Your participation in the band greatly increased the technical quality of songs and albums. It is unusual for a drummer band "Death / Black" use all parts of your drum)
Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater (An icon of the progressive metal, impressive technical quality, ingenious compositions, fantastic) Martin Lopes - Opeth (Accurate, creative, technical. He could feel the music and lead it by the sequence of the most splendid. He had vision and seemed to predict what the music wanted for himself) |

Not entirely sure what you mean by "Not flash, just downright hard-hitting drummers", but my top 3 favourite drumms are
1. Neil Peart (Rush) 2. Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy) 3. Close tie between Dave Mackintosh (DragonForce) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic, etc.)
