Not all that metal... but if you haven't already you should try Rishloo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FW3sqo934g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeLdjRa7vww http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZzZ2e6aXzM&feature=related I got recommended them as 'For Fans Of Tool/A Perfect Circle' Some reviews disagree with that lable, but it worked for me |

I remember hearing them a while back, and was trying to determine if they were metal enough to be added to this site. I noticed you ordered some of their albums, so I'd like to hear your opinion on the matter. In fact, Tool and A Perfect Circle are both on this site. I remember Rishloo often being labelled as a Tool clone, but I haven't heard enough of them to know whether or not that's true.

Well, they are metal for a couple of minutes per album at the bare minimum, put yeah their career as a whole is about as metal as APC.
Regardless of genre, they are awesome, I know that much. One of my absolute favourite new bands gotten into in the last two years. |

I don't know if you want to put Amplifier in, they can be a bit metal too, like as much as Marilyn Manson at least. Planet Of Insects is pretty metal for example...
But it is a borderline case. |

Ha, indeed. Obviously not a sonic or stylistic comparison, just the idea of a borderline case.

Welcome to the site!!
Well, a good crash course in Prog Metal would be of course to start with the 90s basics, beginning with Dream Theater, Queensryche, or Fate's Warning, and then branching off into the genres many subgenres. There are also countless "Dream Theater Clones" as well, i.e. bands that essentially replicate the Dream Theater sound. But, for branching from the "big three" you could move to Symphony X or Psychotic Waltz, or the Symphonic end of the genre with guys like Pagan's Mind or Anubis Gate, although those players came about later on. There is also the extreme side of prog metal, with the fantastic acts of Opeth, Cynic, Meshuggah, Athesist, and many more. On the more experimental side, prog metal finds some of its finest players, including the legend Devin Townsend, Toby Driver's numerous projects, most notably maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot, the black metal bands Alcest, Negura Bunget, and Deathspell Omega, and so many more. There are countless bands that fall into these many little sub-styles of prog metal. My best recommendations would be Dream Theater, Opeth, Cynic, Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Between the Buried and Me, Matraz, Devin Townsend, Alcest, Haken, Scale the Summit, Panzerballett, Exivious, Liquid Tension Experiment, Animals as Leaders, and so many more.

For more obscure bands, I would recommend Grayceon, Indukti, Look to Windward, Amogh Symphony, Cyclamen, Leprous, Random, Tesseract, To-Mera, Mind's Eye, The Last Things, 3, Caligula's Horse, Sonic Pulsar, Appearance of Nothing, Cloudkicker, Platypus, and Gru, among others that I've no doubt forgotten.

You just made my day by mentioning Sonic Pulsar. Playing the Universe is one of my favourite albums. I'd also recommend a related project to the above, Factory of Dreams. I wasn't a big fan until their latest, Melotronical, but I feel they really hit the mark with this one.

Finally there is a Loincloth album ready: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/loincloth.aspx.
The band features Confessor drummer Steve Shelton in the lineup. Anyone who know Confessor, know what that means. Tech rythm heaven
