Something about those old bands like Whiplash, Nuclear Assault, Overkill, and even something like Voivod War and Pain, the dreadful production gives them a naive, raw charm.

^I agree, it gives it that old-school charm. They're all the better for it, as somehow I don't think something like War and Pain would work nearly as well if it had slick hair band production values.
