The ex-lead singer of Spock's Beard and lead singer of Transatlantic has released both prog metal albums and christian rock albums (going along with his born again christain faith).

Oh boy... this is a toughie...
I considered discussing this a week ago when I listened to Sola Scriptura - basically a full-fledged prog metal album IMO. If we were to add him to MMA, I would only tag ?, Sola Scriptura, and maybe One as progressive metal, and the rest as non-metal. If we have Porcupine Tree in a similar situation, I think Neal Morse deserves the same treatment. |

Look at CMX..... It's even worse there. I think Dinosaurus Stereophonicus is prog metal though, but still.

The CMX tagging is still a work in progress, some of their albums might belong in a metal category after all. Talvikuningas was the clearest case, but I'm going to have to listen to for example Isohaara with a metal ear to see if it should be moved too. Perhaps even Dinosaurus Stereophonicus. How well do you know their output? Discopolis might actually have a chance at industrial...

I support the addition of Neal Morse. The only album of his I'm really familiar with his Sola Scriptura, but that alone warrants his inclusion in my opinion. I've heard his others and although I'd have to listen to them again before I can really comment, I think that most if not all his 'prog rock' albums could be tagged as prog metal, from what I remember of them.

Yes. If a band has only one full-on metal album, we should add the artist with just that album (or albums) tagged as metal. The question is whether or not Neal Morse's metal-oriented albums are enough to warrant an inclusion here. I could see that addition taking a beating from a few metal purists, despite my support. |

Considering he started out as just a prog musician, I can see some backlash here. "?", though, isn't really all metal, but merely half metal IMO. |

^ True, but I think it has enough of a metal taste to be called prog metal.

Exactly. If I were to describe Sola Scriptura, ?, or even One, I would label it as progressive rock/metal (just like modern Porcupine Tree and early Riverside IMO). I think this is something the admins should decide in the end. Neal has my support, though. |

And mine, and personally I wouldn't worry about backlash from metal purists, there's many artists listed on MMA already that could give such people a field day. I doubt that Neal would be their high priority really.
I agree though with an admin decision in this case.

I've only heard One, but it's not remotely metal IMO

I'll have to put my vote forward too, I guess, being the Neal Morse fanboy I am , and also I have to admit Sola Scriptura is pretty metal in spots. |

You'll appreciate this story, Brian... For those unfamiliar with my father (Brian knows my dad personally), he is a HUGE Neal Morse fanboy. I asked him what he thought about this addition, just out of mere curiosity. Here's how the conversation went down... Me: "At MMA we're considering adding Neal Morse to prog metal... do you think that's warranted?" Dad: "Metal is a type of music, correct?" Me: "Yeah..." Dad: "Neal IS music. Music IS Neal Morse. Therefore, how can he not be any certain genre of music?" If that's not the response of a fanboy, I don't know what is. |

Listen to Sola Scriptura (part 1 of the first song played live in the first post), it's metal to the core

Is it the entire religion thing, or the music in general? Sometimes his lyrics can really irk me, but I can always look past it for the great music (IMO). |

I own most of Neal's prog albums nad I can say that only Sola Scriptura, the epic, is somewhere near metal. The rest of his rather extensive discography (15 studio albums listed on PA, but I guess there are more) is either progressive rock or gospel music, period. Adding him here taking Sola Scriptura as a basis is actively NOT considering the 14 other albums he released.
