I've never been a fan of Portnoy, especially not his tones.

Mike Portnoy! Because he has more metal style on his playing.

I'm honestly not familiar enough with Mangini's work (I've mainly heard him drum with Steve Vai and a few solos), but was impressed with his audition.

I'll wait until DT does an album with Mangini before voting on this one.

Yeah, you can't really compare the two, but his audition was killer, so I'm definitely looking forward to it. |

I'll abstain from voting... I'll have to hear Mangini on a DT album first.

This. I don't know Mangini really at all so I can't vote. But I was never that impressed with Portnoy. Good for sure but if you listen objectively...he was nothing special. Never blew me away, wasn't that unique or anything. Just was part of DT Edited by The Angry Scotsman - 29 Apr 2011 at 5:24pm |

And by the sounds of it, it seems they are pretty far into their next album |

Fastest drummer in the world.
I hope he has a drum solo of light snare rolls at 1200 BPM And silly science, using uber slow mo to show what I already knew! Oh! And he seems like an awesome drummer. Needs to see how it translates into song mode but yeah, pretty damn good Edited by The Angry Scotsman - 30 Apr 2011 at 4:10am |

Of the seven drummers MM seemed like the best fit. He has a killer personality, and that's what DT needs - seems there's a giant gap to fill after Portnoy left. I'm also looking forward to hear what Portnoys has in store for us! I just hope he doesn't make another DT

maybe Dream Theater now kan have a drummer which can follow Petruccis lighting fast sweep picking, BPM for BPM, and can join the keybord, guitar, bass unissons with Myung, Petrucci and Rudess,
I hope they go back to Images and Wrods, and Awake style (even if that is regressive) better to take three stepp back then one miss step into a sincking pile of mud Edited by Balthamel - 30 Apr 2011 at 6:35am |

That would be epic. And Awake is one of my top 3 DT albums so I guess I'd be fine with that. Agreed, they don't have to be "progressive" they don't have to be anything, just good, which has eluded them for a while now. |

I just hope they go with some heavier things! Octavarium and Train of thought is two of my favorites.

My two favorites as well! Funny since they don't seem to get a lot of love from some DT fans I know. Glad someone agrees with me |

Although I should wait, I've never been impressed with Mangini. He's just really (really) fast, although the audition was fantastic. I feel I'll always like Portnoy better, though. He's my favorite drummer and a huge influence on my own playing.

^Octavarium is my 2nd favorite DT album and I consider myself quite the Dream Theater fanboy. It was actually the first Dream theater album I owned.

From what I see Mangini is more diverse...I mean you can tell Portnoy's drumming from a mile away
