I've decided to start looking into this genre. Any fans of this style here? If so, what are your favorite ones? I'll want to go check them out. I already know I'm going to check out
Quietus by Evoken and The Call of the Wretched Sea by Ahab.

I don't think so, I've never heard them called that. They are more stoner doom, or something. |

^Ah, ok!
Well, Wilytank, try the band french Monolithe (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/monolithe.aspx?ac=monolithe). One of their albums (strangely, not listed on MMA) is free for download in Jamendo: http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/4817 |

Not enough familiar with the genre but the out of my head right now I could list these great albums:
Shape of Despair - Illusion's Play Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation Could also mention Nortt but that would also work in black metal. Edited by Vehemency - 20 May 2011 at 9:17pm |

Bump.
Some of you may have noticed my recent stream of funeral doom metal reviews. The classic bands of the genre are not to be missed.

They're next on my list of classic funeral doom bands to review, but I'll need to give Epistemological Despondency (or whatever) another listen before reviewing, which will be a bitch because Esoteric have a really bad habit of doing two CD albums.
I do really like The Maniacal Vale though.

That reminds me. Gotta check out Theogoten (or whatever). I plan on hitting up some modern funeral doom albums as well. Stay tuned to the Now Playing thread.
