I choose Bill Hicks without hesitation. He's the only stand-up comedian I know, that has all traits (brilliance, charisma, sensitivity and courage) that make up visionary. Izzard, Allen and Gervais are great too. Pablo Francisco does great impersonations but I don't know him very well yet.
And who's your pick? Edited by bartosso - 20 May 2011 at 6:25pm |

Too many to name. I'm not familiar with Dave Allen. Maybe I should check him out.
I'll post a list of some of my many favorites later.

As promised, here are some of my favorite comedians (standup, sketch, or film). I'll share a sample of each in case someone is not familiar with them.
Bill Cosby (Love his clean standup and storytelling ability) Bob Odenkirk/David Cross (Stars of the great sketch show Mr. Show, plus each have done standup of some form) Patton Oswalt (Funny standup, had a reoccurring role on King of Queens, and is hillarious on various podcasts) The Sklar Brothers (twin brother comedians, starred on ESPN's Cheap Seats, hosts of podcast Sklarbro Country) Monty Python (legendary British troupe who shouldn't need an introduction) Kids In The Hall (Canada's greatest sketch comedy export, not afraid of going drag.) Norm Macdonald (another of Canada's exports, great on talk shows, Saturday Night L/iveWeekend Update) Henry Rollins (not exactly a traditional comedian, but tells often hillarious stories on his spoken word tours) That's not even close to all my favorites. If there isn't a Comedy Archives yet, I should get that going. Edited by Stooge - 20 May 2011 at 7:52pm |

Dave Allen is one of my all time favourites. At the moment the comedian who splits my sides more often than not is Michael McIntyre. |

I forgot to mention Steve Coogan. He's definitely one of my favorites as well.
From the list above, I'll vote for Carlin although Ricky Gervais is probably pretty close though he has less output. Eddie Izzard I've only recently started to get into and he's great as well.

I love Dave Allen, Bill Hicks and George Carlin. However, I must say 'Other' because for me, Bill Bailey wins hands down.

Probably Jimmy Carr, but I'm generally not too big on comedians.

Carr's great. I assume you're referring to standup comedians because who doesn't love to laugh?

Bill Hicks. George Carlin by a close second, but I seem to relate to Bill Hicks more.

Out of the ones listed above, I'll go with Eddie Izzard because of his surreal ramblings on baboons, cats, Greek mythology, giraffes, Romans, phaser settings and whatnot.
Others are Russell Peters, Richard Pryor, Flight of the Conchords, Pat McIntyre, Omid Djalili, Lee Mack, and, of course, the entire Monty Python crew. I like Pablo Fransisco's impersonations (although not all of his material is quite up to scratch), and I think that Jeff Dunham is pretty funny too (although I do not think that "The Jeff Dunham Show" was that great). I also like Russ Noble for having a totally far out and surreal style, and, yes, I do think that Seinfeld is an incredibly funny stand-up comedian and that the "Seinfeld" show was awesome, and I also like Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde-Pierce are brilliant in "Frasier", as are David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry in "Friends". Oh, and, yes, I still have a weakness for Benny Hill's silliness, and I Patricia Routledge is hilarious in "Keeping Up Appearances". If Mel Brooks and the Zucker-Abrams-Zucker team qualify as comedians, then I add them here, too, because, at least they knew how to make good spoof movies. And there was just something special about the entire cast in the first "Police Academy" movie. And Rowan Atkinson was brilliant as Mr Bean, Black Adder, and Johnny English, and, of course, Fry and Laurie (yes, the guy from "House M.D." were also incredibly funny. Returning to stand-up comedy, Robin Williams has done some pretty incredible stand-up, too. Edited by Time Signature - 29 Oct 2011 at 9:01am |
