There are certain bands that it seems almost expected that every rock/metal fan is into.
I'll list some of them here, and you can see what you think is missing.

Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Machine Head, Motor Head, Ozzy, Pink Floyd

But then I suppose Green Day and Blink 182 would be too.

Then there is like Rolling Stones, Elvis, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Who, Queen

Which of them do you listen to, which don't you ? and who is missing ?

I suppose Roth-era Van Halen could be up there too, and the reunion/upcoming album should spark a revival.  Based on sales figures and classic rock radio play, I'm tempted to say Rush as well, though there are many who associate the band with nerds and all things geeky Geek.

I would also think that Aerosmith, Alice In Chains, Def Lep, Dio, Kiss, Motley Crue, and the Scorps get quite a bit of love, as well. You can argue metal/rock credentials all you want amongst them, fact is, at the end of the day, they have a ton of fans and have sold millions of albums.

Early Def Leppard and early Scorpions are definitely among the main bands.

Ask any straight up metalhead and they'll hate Green Day and Blink 182. But for rock fans of certain age they might be essential. For me, getting into rock music in the mid-90s, Green Day was the first big thing, my first true love. And Blink might be the same thing for kids five or ten years younger, but for me they were the same thing over again, watered down but with a couple of good bits in it.

I'm not going to do the full list, but most of those bands I like more or less.

The only one out of those that I listen to frequently anymore is Pink Floyd.  I used to be really big on Machine Head, Megadeth, Priest, etc. but I haven't listened to any of their albums all the way through in a really long time.

My first concert was supposed to be Limp Bizkit... but Fred injured his back and they cancelled so I got a refund.
Then it was going to be Tattoo The Planet, but Pantera pulled out after September 11th, so I lost interest.
It ended up being Ozzfest with Slayer and Tool etc.

y'all suckers, my first concert was Judas Priest

Also, I find I can't stand "classic rock radio" type bands anymore
