If I'm honest most of the time I couldn't tell you who the artist is for most cover arts, Derek Riggs aside and have not even heard of any of the other names on that list, not even Andreas Marschall, and as he's done Blind Guardian means he's done my favourite band's art. Embarrassed Although there's a couple of absent names whose work I've admired, such as Dan Seagrave and Jowita Kamińska-Peruzzi, whose work I can recognise at least some of the time. I think Seagrave has done some of the best death metal covers. I'll vote for Marschall on the poll.

I haven't been paying great attention to who's new to the album art scene.  I'm only really familiar with names that have been out there for several years (Hugh Syme, Dave Mckean, Travis Smith, Derek Riggs, Away, ...). Many bands seem to handle the art themselves these days.  Of classic guys, I really dig Dan Seagrave's covers.

^Guys, thanks for these other names! Yes, I forgot to add Away and Hugh Syme to this list... And also forgot to add the "Other" option...Dead

By the way,  the art of Dave Seagrave is really impressive: http://www.danseagrave.com/art/

And, there also Michael Whelan: http://www.michaelwhelan.com/gallery/illustration/horror/

For all that I like Derek Riggs work I have not voted as my fave is definitely Dan Seagrave especially for Entombed, Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, Pestilence & Suffocation.

For this list, I voted Derek Riggs. My favourite artist is a toss up between Dan Seagrave and Ed Repka.

How did I forget about Ed Repka? Embarrassed

I guess Vince Locke is another big name not yet mentioned, who's known for his graphic Cannibal Corpse covers and his comic book work.  http://vincelocke.com/

Though I like a lot of the big names, I'm not sure if I'd chase one to do a cover if I had a band and the money.  I like the idea of finding an artist that is under-utilized.

From that list I would choose Andreas Marschall. Second place to Derek Riggs for the classic Maiden era but he has become a disappointment with his computer graphics work (see Stratovarius or Gamma Ray). Andreas Marschall has a huuuuge catalogue, Blind Guardian is just the surface, he's done covers for so many artists....

I see some obvious names are mentioned already, like Ed Repka, Dan Seagrave, Michael Whelan (Beneath the Remains and Cause of Death are my favorites, masterpieces both)  but I am still missing Sebastian Kruger (he did the Tankard covers, as well as Risk - RATMAN!), whose work I really love, apart from the album covers that is.
Also Thomas Holm and Torbjrn Jrgenson, who are the people who did the Mercyful Fate/King Diamond covers (among other things, such as Wolf). Incidentally, I am not a huge fan of Travis Smith but he did a fantastic job for KD's Abigail II. A terrible shame that album was so mediocre.
Speaking of Smith, I should also mention Gary Smith, the guy behind the classic Savatage covers (Hall, Gutter, From the Gutter to the Stage etc)
Pushead, the dude who does the single covers for Metallica and their shirts (ok, St. Anger too but...) and also C.O.C and Prong. Love his work.
Finally, I should give the nod to Andrei Bouzikov, who does most of the new wave of thrash metal covers, a true disciple of Ed Repka.

I am sure I am missing some more...

Derek Riggs actually kinda disqualifies himself for his cheesy looking 3D art for Stratovarius and Gamma Ray.

Vote goes to other: Kris Verwimp
