Metal Music Archives Collaborator's Top Albums of 2013 Compiled by adg211288 1. (217 Points) Riverside - Shrine of New Generation Slaves (Metal Related) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/riverside/shrine-of-new-generation-slaves "It is awe inspiring that Riverside maintains such a consistent high quality from album to album. 'Out of Myself', 'Second Life Syndrome', 'Rapid Eye Movement' and especially 'Anno Domini High Definition' are treasures of prog, and now 'Shrine of New Generation Slaves' is the pinnacle of their master class musicianship; a genuine musical epiphany." - AtomicCrimsonRush (MMA Metal Reviewer) 2. (196 Points) Gorguts - Colored Sands (Technical Death Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/gorguts/colored-sands "This is in every way possible a very unique and innovative sounding release by Gorguts, which might draw on some of the same elements as their groundbreaking "Obscura (1998)" album did, but at the same time adds a lot of atmosphere to those elements and therefore ultimately sounds very little like that album. There´s no arguing that "Colored Sands" is an incredible comeback album by Gorguts and to my ears maybe their strongest release to date." - UMUR (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 2. (196 Points) Haken - The Mountain (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/haken/the-mountain "If you have never heard Haken then the time to do it is now, and if you have, then you can rest assured that these guys have kept pushing the envelope to create something which is stunning, just stunning." - Kev Rowland (MMA Collaborator) 4. (179 Points) Ayreon - The Theory of Everything (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/ayreon/the-theory-of-everything "Lucassen's bombastic approach to songwriting and arrangement has always sounded genuine to my ears, and although some folks will still find Ayreon to be too overblown for its own good, this album is a captivating delight for all fans of epic progressive metal operas. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get much better than The Theory of Everything!" - J-Man (MMA Collaborator) 5. (166 Points) Kayo Dot - Hubardo (Avant-Garde Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/kayo-dot/hubardo "HUBARDO, the seventh album by the avant-chamber-rock/experimental metal band Kayo Dot, is the ultimate evidence that music is boundless. It's one of those rare pieces of art that are so unique and passion driven, that any attempt to analyze and deconstruct it backfires on the reviewer." - bartosso (MMA Collaborator) 6. (165 Points) Black Sabbath - 13 (Traditional Heavy Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/black-sabbath/13 "Only the test of time will tell the end results, but I'm pretty positive that we can add a seventh album to the string of Ozzy Sabbath classics. Welcome back and farewell, gentlemen!" - Pekka (MMA Collaborator) 7. (164 Points) Fates Warning - Darkness In A Different Light (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/fates-warning/darkness-in-a-different-light "We are definitely dealing with a successful comeback, and I particularly enjoy the combination of simple grooves and technical rhythms. Not all tracks on the album appeal to me equally much, but overall we are dealing with, for my money at least, the best Fates Warning release since “A Pleasant Shade of Grey”." - Time Signature (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 8. (153 Points) Thought Chamber - Psykerion (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/thought-chamber/psykerion "Psykerion stands as one of 2013's high quality progressive metal releases, even going as far as to blow field leaders Dream Theater and their latest self-titled effort out the water." - adg211288 (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 9. (150 Points) Dream Theater - Dream Theater (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/dream-theater/dream-theater "Love 'em or loathe 'em, Dream Theater still has the power to make the rock world wake up and take notice." - AtomicCrimsonRush (MMA Metal Reviewer) 10. (149 Points) Carcass - Surgical Steel (Melodic Death Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/carcass/surgical-steel ""Surgical Steel" is upon conclusion a high quality comeback for Carcass and it´s not audible for a second that they have been gone from the scene for so many years (or that they are not twenty anymore). The songwriting is top notch and the delivery is convincing and passionate." - UMUR (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 10. (149 Points) Cult of Luna - Vertikal (Atmospheric Sludge Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/cult-of-luna/vertikal "The three Cult of Luna albums I'd heard preceding this - the run from Salvation to Eternal Highway - had all presented enjoyable post-metal soundscapes, but I'd always felt that there was the potential for them to raise the bar a little, and on Vertikal they had just done that." - Warthur (MMA Metal Reviewer) 12. (140 Points) Intronaut - Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words With Tones) (Atmospheric Sludge Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/intronaut/habitual-levitations-instilling-words-with-tones "I´d mention acts like Cynic, Baroness, Helmet and Tool as references at various points on the album, but Intronaut have crafted quite a unique sound on "Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words With Tones)" and deserve to be judged on their own." - UMUR (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 13. (133 Points) Exivious - Liminal (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/exivious/liminal "Liminal is through and through a brilliant release. The musicianship are on a high level (these guys sound at ease with playing the technically challenging sections. Everything just sound very natural and never forced), The sound production is very strong and the songwriting intriguing and powerful. There is nothing in this world that can hold me back from giving Liminal a deserved 4.5 star (90%) rating." - UMUR (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 14. (123 Points) Leprous - Coal (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/leprous/coal "It's pretty incredible how much a band can change in four years. From "Tall Poppy Syndrome" to this, the level of ambition and left-field wizardry has increased with each step. Although it will be some time before I'll truly know where "Coal" stands in comparison to the rest of the band's work, Leprous have delivered one of the most musically compelling experiences of the year thus far." - Conor Fynes (MMA Collaborator) 15. (116 Points) Tesseract - Altered State (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/tesseract/altered-state "In conclusion, this new direction for the band on this album is pretty mind blowing at times. I do prefer a lot of tracks to others, and it's the tracks that are more different are actually my favourites. Which makes me believe that whatever this band decided to do next will be the real triumph. I predict that this is only the beginning of something which could be something huge for the metal community in years to come." - arcane-beautiful (MMA Metal Reviewer) 16. (107 Points) Voivod - Target Earth (Progressive Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/voivod/target-earth "Voivod have always challenged their listeners, and they continue to do so do on this album. If you are not already a fan of progressive and quirky music, you might not be able to handle this album, but fans of progressive and experimental music should definitely give Voivod's latest effort a spin, and fans of the band need not fear that Target Earth does not sound like Voivod - in fact, I think that d'Amour would be proud of the way the band carries on the Voivod spirit." - Time Signature (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 17. (103 Points) Hell - Curse & Chapter (Traditional Heavy Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/hell/curse-and-chapter "This is simply not to be missed if you are a fan of heavy metal in any shape or form. It betters Human Remains by the fact that the songs aren't too drawn out with narration, allowing them to get to the point hell of a lot quicker with no falloff between them. The material is faithful to their sound on Human Remains, but sounds honed by experience in comparison. Saying it is powerful doesn't even begin to cover it. With this they firmly cement their reputation as a top tier band." - adg211288 (MMA Admin and Collaborator) 17. (103 Points) Motorpsycho - Still Life With Eggplant (Hard Rock) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/motorpsycho/still-life-with-eggplant "Their diversity is one of their strengths though and I wouldn´t have it any other way and enjoy most of their output however "different" some of it are. "Still Life With Eggplant" might be one of their more "safe" efforts but but it´s still a very strong release." - UMUR (MMA Admin & Reviewer) 19. (95 Points) Queensrÿche - Queensrÿche (Traditional Heavy Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/queensryche/queensryche "As long as you aren’t preprogrammed to hate it regardless of what it actually sounds like, the passion, energy and quality of this album should win you over. Sure, its not the best thing ever released under the Queensrÿche name, but it’s not just passable either, its a damn good album for Queensrÿche in 2013." - Kingcrimsonprog (MMA Collaborator) 20. (94 Points) Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance (Traditional Heavy Metal) http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/darkthrone/the-underground-resistance "The Underground Resistance comes across as a celebration of classic black metal - not the Norwegian wave of which Darkthrone were themselves pioneers, but the first wave in the 1980s which served as their inspiration." - Warthur (MMA Metal Reviewer)

Great Work Adam . Interesting to see Motorpsycho on the list. One of my favorites from this year. I guess I wasn´t the only one WHO enjoyed that album.

Good job Adam.
Surprising final list for these ears which I guess mimics the taste of most collaborators around here. |

Looks great, Adam. There's a certain experimental bent to this list, which as Steve implies probably isn't surprising. We need more collabs from a non-PA / prog-metal background I guess!

Good job, Adam. I'm embarrased to say I've yet to hear the Riverside. I'll be sure to get some of their stuff in the near future as I'd heard a few of their songs lately (and enjoyed them) while bouncing around on Youtube.

Fantastic and, most of all, really quick work, Adam. I didn't expect to see this so soon!
And woah, Riverside won, I didn't see that coming. Good album for sure, even though not flawless and not that metal ^^ And I thought Hubardo would end up higher... still a good list, though.

Heh, I'm probably out of step with folks here because I've never rated Riverside especially highly and their latest album didn't inspire me to change my mind on that score, but nice to see some of my picks (Haken, Darkthrone, Cult of Luna, Carcass, Leprous) getting into the top spots.

Riverside is a band you love despite their faults, just like a retarded child (oupss, political correctness failure). I agree with some of the criticism they receive, but still, they're so disarmingly genuine in what they do, that I can blink at these little shortcomings. Maan, I just love these guys |

After the first 7 or 8 lists were posted, Hubardo looked like potentially #1 overall (which would probably be silly given how avant-garde it is). But then a bunch of other lists got posted. |

Actually I thought Kayo Dot was going to nab this all the way through putting the votes into a spreadsheet for adding up. Riverside proved a bit of a dark horse though - didn't top any individual list, but was included pretty high up on most that did include it.
I've only actually heard six of these that made it to the top 20 this year (15 out top 50), but I'm definitely intrigued by that Gorguts album in particular now. Here's the the rest of the fully top 50 for those interested: 21. Vaura - The Missing (91 Points) 22. James LaBrie - Impermanent Resonance (75 Points) 23. Fen - Dustwalker (71 Points) 24. Lalu - Atomic Ark (69 Points) 24. The Prophecy - Salvation (69 Points) 26. Death Angel - The Dream Calls for Blood (67 Points) 27. The Ocean - Pelagial (63 Points) 28. Alice in Chains - The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (61 Points) 29. Summoning - Old Morning's Dawn (59 Points) 30. Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor (58 Points) 31. Coheed & Cambria – The Afterman Descention (56 Points) 32. Karnivool - Aysmmetry (54 Points) 33. Procession - To Reap Heavens Apart (53 Points) 33. Vandroya - One (53 Points) 35. Dark Design - Prey for the Future (52 Points) 36. Deep Purple - Now What!? (50 Points) 36. Jinetes Negros - Tawa Sarira (50 Points) 36. Satan - Life Sentence (50 Points) 39. Cloudkicker - Subsume (48 Points) 39. Omnium Gatherum - Beyond (48 Points) 39. Rotting Christ - Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy (48 Points) 39. SubRosa - More Constant than the Gods (48 Points) 39. The Dillinger Escape Plan - One of Us is the Killer (48 Points) 44. Amorphis - Circle (47 Points) 44. Guapo - History of the Visitation (47 Points) 46. Grayceon - Pearl & The End of Days (46 Points) 46. Illusion Suite - The Iron Cemetery (46 Points) 46. Satan's Host - Virgin Sails (46 Points) 46. Soilwork - The Living Infinite (46 Points) 50. Russian Circles - Memorial (45 Points) I was actually putting results together all day on the first since I also had my own site to add up, and we run more than just a best albums poll. I think I need a break from the computer now to give my hands a rest.

Kinda surprised the new Riverside won.
It's a pretty good album, but not a greatalbum, and not even their best one, imo. Good post though, I'm youtubing some of the list I haven't heard of as I type this. That Leprous sounds pretty good Tried to listen to more of that Kayodot, and I just don't get it (again). Not a fan, I guess. |

Strange outcome, how is the winning album even metal? It's ballad pop with the some sparse hard-rock thrown in. Boo! |

Well since we also embrace metal-related releases/artists (and the new Riverside does even feature a metal riff or two ), there is a risk that the Collabs pick is a release that´s not necessarily that "metal".

The rules were that albums included had to be on MMA. There weren't any restrictions placed on releases within Metal Related sub-genres (MR, HR, H&C, proto), as the idea of having this section of MMA is that releases within are of interest to metal fans, so it's perfectly legitimate for a MR release to have won, even if it seems it was placed incorrectly for some time (which I'm about to fix) and in my opinion its even validation for the sub being here. Am I happy it won? Not really, nothing I've heard from the band when they were producing more metal oriented work convinced me that they were anything more than passable, but they did win fair and square.
