To complement the Albums you're looking forward to, 2014 thread.
This is my 2014 list so far. Everything I've written a review for, not just the good ones.
Still to Place:

I just picked up the new Epica album, 'The Quantum Enigma'
I need to give it a couple of more listens, but this may be their best album yet. My past favorite has been 'Design Your Universe' I'm not a huge Epica fan, but I do think that they've gotten much better since the addition of guitarist Isaac Delahaye. All 3 albums he's been on have been pretty good, much better than the previous stuff. I still like Epica better as a live band, because it strips away all of those choir-like choruses that they do on the albums (which are generally too over-the-top, imo). I feel like I'm reviewing slower this year, but I did pass 50 reviews a little while ago. Here's my updated list:

I don't really know how to answer that. It does help though that I get a lot of given to me for free from the labels and promoters. Actually, the list is the reviewed albums only. The actual number of albums I've heard released this year is 60 exactly. |

Come on people we want to see lists!
Here's my latest update. I'm trying to focus my reviews on some stuff that isn't power metal for a while to make it more diverse.
These are the albums I've heard put haven't yet placed:

I've only played each once. Mastodon was quite impressive and Opeth's may need a few listens to sink in. I expect I'll cover both of those sooner rather than later.

So far I've gotten:
Alcest - Shelter Delain - The Human Contradiction Distorted Harmony - Chain Reaction Eluveitie - Origins Epica - The Quantum Enigma Iced Earth - Plagues Of Babylon Sonata Arctica - Pariah's Child Stream Of Passion - A War Of Our Own Teramaze - Esoteric Symbolism Vanden Plas - Chronicles Of The Immortals Vanishing Point - Distant Is The Sun Within Temptation - Hydra So far, I like every single one of those albums, but not one of them would I consider a 'great' album. Out of all of them I'd probably have to pick the Teramaze as my album of the year so far. Some very cool riffing and oh-so slightly proggy. Not much is left of their thrash-metal sound, but it's still pretty cool regular metal I love the new Within Temptation album as well, though in my personal opinion it isn't quite as good as 2011's 'The Unforgiving'. I've got the new Opeth and the latest Insomnium on the way thru the mail, and am looking forward to the new Threshold and the new Evergrey.

Here's my updated list (hit 80 2014 reviews today), pretty version at: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/adg211288/2014_album_rankings/
And again the stuff I've heard but not as yet reviewed.
hmm, didn't realise I'd had so much of a boas towards prog this year before re-adding the genres to this list. |
