Enslaved for me are one of the more interesting bands in the extreme metal arena who have become far more than simply the black metal band they started as. Their last few albums have been particularly good and the highpoint of their career in my opinion. It's only in the last year or so that I've investigated their earlier stuff (pre- Isa) but although I still prefer later releases I've found much to enjoy there too.
When In Times was released I thought it their best yet but after the dust has settled I think I slightly prefer RIITIIR as my favourite. So what's yours?

Can't comment on pre-Isa either but it's Riitiir for me too.

One of those bands that I really need to spend some time properly checking out.
My ratings show that I must have heard Axioma Ethica Odini and liked it a lot, but I don't remember anything about it. I also reviewed the free EP The Sleeping Gods, which I also liked. By the way you guys that know them better, their tagging is definitely off to be 100% under black metal right?

^ That's a good point but the only other genre they could really fit is prog metal. I'd say In Times is the only album where the prog metal quotient could outweight the black metal despite a lot of their work having prog touches. I know the band themselves describe their music simply as extreme metal not wanting to be pigeonholed into one sub genre.

RIITIIR. I think albums like Vertebrae, RIITIIR, and In Times could be placed in prog. Enslaved is a bit difficult though as every album since Monumension (even on Mardraum) has featured at least some proggy ideas. It wasnt´until Vertebrae that I think they were more prog than Black though and then they released Axioma Ethica Odini, which I think probably belongs more in Black than in prog. The two latest belong more in prog than Black to my ears.

I would personally place the last four plus The Sleeping Gods as progressive metal instead of black metal.
On topic I'm fondest of Isa but RIITIIR is a close second. I enjoy all their work but I think they took a turn for the better starting with Below the Lights. |

I'm not a huge fan of Enslaved, but I really like RIITIIR. It's pretty much the only album I've heard by them that I'll never get bored with. I may need to listen to Isa, though.

Monumension. Enslaved is one of the few bands that i actually like every single album but Monumension has an extra special intensity that excites me every time i listen to it.

^ That is a good choice. Although I generally prefer later stuff I think it's one of the best from the first half of their career.

^ To be fair it's really hard to choose. I just listened to that one again and was blown away. Their consistency is amazing. I'm a huge fan of RIITTIIR, Isa and the rest so i guess it depends which day you ask me!

Eld is the only one I have. It's OK, but I've never been inspired to buy another.

Its not at all hard for me, Frost is my favorite Enslaved album (as well as one of my all time top Black Metal albums) but my favorite song though is probably Havenless from the album Below The Lights. I always look forward to a new Enslaved album because this is a band that never repeats itself. None of their albums sound the same (though some are more similar then others) and I think that's pretty rare in music.
Seeing them live (Eisntaflug festival, last year, absolutely fantastic) was very interesting in the way that although they played material spanning their entire catalog none of it felt out of place compared to the rest and I think that's a pretty remarkable achievement in and of itself considering how much they've changed over the years. Anyone else seen em live and have any thoughts on that? As for the genre, tagging them as: Black Metal (early), Progressive Black Metal (mid), Progressive Metal (late-current) would probably be the most accurate. |

I've heard the debut and Isa. I love the debut, and Isa was decent but there wasn't much that stood out to me.
